I'm surprised Edward Stiles Stokes isn't included here, the murderer of Big Jim Fisk; on Edward's page William is mentioned as his cousin, with whom he fell out but was finally --- in best Victorian style --- reconciled at the point of death.

Both cousins seem remarkably litigious.

William seems like all of us, a mixture of light and shade; his keeping animals in his apartments is lovely, yet that contemporary --- pointless --- fascination with Eugenics less so. As to his relationships, we are all buffeted by Fate, so who can judge ?
