Why "von"?

GM Wilhelm Friedrich Roettig, born 25.7.1888 in Mühlhausen/ Thüringen was not noble, so not a "von". Just like his elder brother General der Infanterie Otto Roettig. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.107.68.248 (talk) 15:54, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
