Sympathizes with Hitler
[edit]An edit that I made about the film, that it has scenes that sympathize with Hitler, was deleted by another author. The other author pretended that the film isn't sympathetic to Hitler, and that it's a matter of opinion. The claim is akin to when Trump quotes positive things about white nationalists, and then claims he isn't supporting them, he's only repeating something he heard. The fact is that people who don't support white nationalists don't quote them like that. I think it's appropriate to warn people about how offensive the movie is, with scenes that compare Nazi rallies to modern rock concerts and compare Hitler to Elvis. Hate crimes are on the rise in the US, and many of those committing hate crimes are Neo-Nazis. In such an environment, the skill of the filmmaker becomes secondary to his contribution to hate crimes. - The content in question is a satire of specialization within academia, the element of Gladney's department of "Hitler studies" is taken directly from the novel.
- The film and book are not choosing to positively compare those two, but rather complain about the flattening and sterilizing Academia does to various subject matter, which allows Elvis to be compared to Hitler as if both are simply cultural objects. I hope this helps to clarify what is going on here, and why your edit would be deleted. The novel's Wikipedia article has a more detailed explanation of the satire, with several sources. Murray's last name?
[edit]Does Murray have a last name in the movie? imdb.com only lists "Murray" in the cast, but it is waiting for confirmation. In the novel he was first mentioned as "Murray Jay Siskind". 96.5.122.4 (talk) 17:32, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
- According to the script (link in the article), the character is named "Murray Siskind", and he introduces himself by first and last name when he runs into Gladney in the supermarket. 2607:F470:E:22:C547:4EE8:EF72:5589 (talk) 23:02, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
Disaster film
[edit]Would argue it is a disaster film. A very special one, but nevertheless. Added category 2020s diaster films. What do you folks think? ☆☆☆ interstellarpoliceman ☆☆☆ 20:51, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
Life imitating art
[edit]At some point, RS will start commenting that this movie, filmed in northeastern Ohio, was a little too close to home regarding the recent derailment, toxic fire, and long-term evacuation "event" in northeastern Ohio. We can cite RS on this connection, but we can't introduce it on our own. 2607:F470:E:22:41A:EBED:8E3C:A7B0 (talk) 18:34, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- Might at least be worth linking it under "See also". 216.137.228.198 (talk) 05:18, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
