Flight speed

The claimed speed of 170 km/h in horizontal flight is long known to be false, as the greatest known airspeed achieved by a swift (species unspecified) was 40 km/h (25 mph). Birds are endotherms. Rather than avoiding exertion and relying on anaerobic respiration to supply peak needs, birds maintain a high metabolic rate with aerobic respiration. The references given are only anecdotes. The Common swift (Apus apus) was accurately measured at 40 km/h in steady flight but can accelerate to about 70 km/h in level flight. Larger species can accelerate to only slightly higher speeds. Of course, in slightly descending flights all swifts (and actually any aerodynamic bird) can fly at more than 100 km/h, but probably not much higher than 150km/h.
