Southern Whale Cult

[edit]

The pre-"We Care" discography for the band -- including longer versions of the "Whale" name and a series of Swedish-only albums -- was a joke perpetrated in the late '90s on the Whale website. They never changed their name, and they never released an album previous to "We Care."

The site listed a backstory in which the band changed their name from "Southern Whale Cult" to "Whale Cult," and then "The Whale," and finally "Whale." This was a spoof on the history of band "The Cult" (originally "Southern Death Cult"). They also had images of fake album covers and descriptions of the album contents.

Cia Soro was in contact with many fans (including me) but she always sidestepped these albums when politely asked about them. After harassing a Virgin record exec about re-releasing the backcatalog, he and I were both embarassed to discover that we'd been fooled; he reported that it was all a joke. Soro thought it was all very funny.

Still, biographies of the band continue to list those albums. Kudos to the band for fooling so many of us for so long, but Wikipedia should probably have the facts: two albums, no name change. 209.183.151.182 (talk) 16:12, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I've deleted that passage. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.211.18.71 (talk) 13:26, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox problems

[edit]

The infobox currently states that they were active from 1993 to 2008, however the article mentions a lengthly hiatus which ended at some point before All Disco Dance Must End in Broken Bones was recorded, and doesn't provide any information about the band's history after the 1990s. -- Gordon Ecker (talk) 01:57, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hobo... title

[edit]

According to the cover images at Discogs ([1]), the 1993 release was called "Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe" (no apostrophe) and the 1995 re-release "Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe" (with apostrophe). In either case there could have been a typo or it could have been done for stylistic reasons. It may be worth amending the 1993 release in the discography to remove the apostrophe, though there could also be an argument for consistency. --Jameboy (talk) 16:47, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
