  • The racial profile stats dont even add up to 100% -Luckyluke, Oct 15, 2005
  • Where'd the statistics found in the 'demographics' section come from? -Luckyluke, July 6, 2005
  • Luckyluke, I've changed the "Surrounding" box back to "North Shore Mountains" because it better reflects the mountain range behind West Vancouver. The West Van web site also refers to this range, and not just to Cypress Mountain. (BTW - there is a reference to Cypress on the NS Mountains page.) I like the addition of Squamish and Whistler - it helps to create a sense of the region. Ckatz 10:54, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Needs cleanup

The page has too much white space adn the list is too long - can it please be made more concise? Hu Gadarn 03:48, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

Umm, I'm not sure how we could shorten the list, its all fairly important information about the history, as for the white space, do you have any ideas, if we add tables and put stuff side by side it would seem cluttered w/ unrelated stuff next to each other. Again, any suggestions are very welcome -- Tawker 04:18, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

buses

The line about the blue buses being the only municipal bus system in the GVRD even though it's operated by translink makes no sense to me. How are they both municipal (i.e., West Vancouver's own) and Translink (i.e., regional, not municipal)?Bobanny 00:04, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

They operate under contract to Translink but are owned and operated by the DWV -- Tawker 00:09, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Does that mean there's no connection to Coast Mountain Bus Co. (Translink's subsidiary)?Bobanny 00:25, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Correct -- Tawker 00:27, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

More photos

Just so everyone knows I've filed a request w/ the West Vancouver archives to see what I can find to improve the historical section a bit, I'm not sure how much deeper we want to go than just the timeline -- 06:38, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Photos from before 1948 are public domain and can be downloaded from the library's website here and uploaded to Wikipedia (or preferably to Wikicommons). Chances are that the City of Vancouver Archives will have a lot more West Vancouver photos. Just be sure and include an appropriate copyright tag. Use {{PD-Canada}}, or for images from before 1923, this one is probably better because it covers the US as well: {{PD-old-50}}, or this one, which is more generic: {{PD-old}} Bobanny 01:27, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

friggin white space

The Vancouver article had the same problem with the big block of white at the beginning, and the only solution I found was to fill it in with text, in otherwards, expand the geography section. Bobanny 01:27, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Citation

West Vancouver also has the West Vancouver Memorial Library which has the highest circulation rate per capita in Canada.

I'm curious about this fact, I've never heard it before and I go the that library frequently. Is there an article that cites this fact? --Omnieiunium 00:53, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

It has been cited. Luke! 12:30, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Name origins

Any idea why it's called "West Vancouver"? It's not actually west of Vancouver. fishhead64 (talk) 06:40, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

It is 'west' of 'north' Vancouver. Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 13:21, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
Then shouldn't it be called "West North Vancouver"? OK, now I'm just being random. fishhead64 (talk) 20:07, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
Sigh. Fishhead, don't be coy. When it was named "Vancouver" meant the downtown peninsula; and not too long before "Vancouver" had meant only Vancouver Island, so "what's in a name?" - not much. Mission, in fact, almost named itself East Vancouver (and North Seattle, too...). Remember also that Point Grey was a separate city, to the west of the City of Vancouver, when West Van was named; why it stuck only as a name on the North Shore is anyone's guess, but consider that "West End" was already taken, and "West Side" was in formation. A date of first provenance of "West Vancouver" would be a good thing to have, and also maybe the circumstances of the naming debate i.e. what other names were considered, if anySkookum1 (talk) 14:58, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

West Van neighbourhoods

While looking for something else I happened to find the BCGNIS listing for Altamont, which is just west of Dundarave although I don't have any definitions for it past that; West Van has a lot of named neighbourhoods, we shoudl try and list them all and describe the major/older ones, no?Skookum1 (talk) 14:58, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Proposal to rename page

The following is a closed discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the proposal was move.

Proposed rename: West Vancouver, British ColumbiaWest Vancouver West Vancouver currently redirects to West Vancouver, British Columbia. There is no West Vancouver (disambiguation) page; other uses of West Vancouver in page names are either secondary to the community or used in composite names. As the place name is evidently unique and primary, it is proposed to simplify the page name per WP:CANSTYLE and WP:PRIMARYUSAGE. Dl2000 (talk) 02:32, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

"Richest" vs "most expensive"

In the Affluence section it says WEst Van is uaully known as the "most espensive municipality"....I'm sure I've always heard "the richest", a title also that went back and forth with Whistler (if only property holders in Whistler were counted, not dishpigs and lifties). So the stats I've always seen had to do with income levels, not with housing prices which is a somewhat separate issue...and there's Whistler again in the same cotnext, at least for a while. Also in relation to real estate, we always used to say that the farther west, and the farther high up, you went in WEst Van, the price went up with hte view/seclusion; samples of hosue prices at the top of the British Properties vs Ambleside and Whytecliffe/Caulfield vs Dundarave might be instructive.....Skookum1 (talk) 21:48, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Sandy Bay

1914 was the first permanent native esttlement? Where'd that come from? There migth have been no active Skwxwu7mesh village along there -although I think OldManRivers said there was - but 1914 seems a bit late for "first settlement" of any kind.....also to note the early settlements/lodges were at first boat, then railway (from Lonsdale) based, before the bridge....not sure when tracks were run out to Whytecliffe but it was before, I think the PGE was spawned....although Norris' old cartoons lampooning how close the tracks were to the tea-and-mutual funds grannies of Amblesnide & Tiddlycove suggest maybe they were a new thing; all the dates in the crhonology need citing anyway, and some need fuerther explanation, like Navvy Jack's washed gravel.....Skookum1 (talk) 21:51, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

location of Squamish

I amended the "surrounding municipalities" box which had Lions Bay and Squamish to the northwest; I put them to the north, which is exactly true about Lions Bay, but am reconsidering Squamish; it's actually northeast, or north-northeast anyway. Also in the "northwest" spot should maybe be Bowen Island, and Sunshine Coast should definitely not be there, but in the "west"; Vancouver is to the southeast, and (across the Georgia Strait) is approximately Ladysmith.....Skookum1 (talk) 16:54, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Mis-leading language data

I'm not sure how to re-word this:

Top non official languages

Something like "Non-official languages (% of 23.74%) seems too awkward; shouldn't these languaes be presented in their "true percentage".....of are they "double responses" and the 74.5% English speakers is meant to incldue the Farsi and Chinese etc? Is this "languages spoken at home" or "mother tongue" or what?Skookum1 (talk) 14:25, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Still querying that, no answer; are the percentages of non-official languages percentages of that 23.7% in the first section, or are they of the population at large? In which case they add up to about 64% of West Van's population...which these days may be is even true.....as I said before elsewhere such statistics can be very misleading when their nature is muddled; their selection/presentation is also often politically-motivated/skewed. Also worth pondering that most of that French is probably European French, not Canadian.....Skookum1 (talk) 16:58, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
I agree, they should be given as a percent of total (since they must be percentages of the 23.7%). My only question is if the other ~35% of non official languages are just "other"? TastyCakes (talk) 17:08, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
The first bit seems to come from the stats can data here, but the numbers seem off - it says (by mother tongue) English is 70%, French is 1.2% and other is 28%. For "Language most spoken at home) it's 83% English, 0.4% French and 28% other. If there are no objections, I'm going to remove the "top non official languages" since it appears to be unsourced, and insert the corrected data for English, French and non official. TastyCakes (talk) 17:14, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
I think that's a good solution, and removes the implication of bias towards the more prominent groups; and it would have had to be OR/synthesis to establish those figures, and to select from them (leaving the "other" out, or labelling it as one group, which StatsCan I know doesn't). "Major minority" chauvinism is a fairly common problem in lots of Wikipedia articles. Still, it's odd to see an article about the North Shore which doesn't mention the Persian presence....Skookum1 (talk) 19:22, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Ya there is a chart of number of people by race on the same census page, that should probably be put into the demographics section as a table... TastyCakes (talk) 19:27, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
You'll find a table you can copy-over from Abbotsford, British Columbia#Demograhpics and you'll note there the Ethnic groups table comes before the Visible Minorities one (i.e. ethnicity is a different thing than race); but Census Canada only provides some cities with full ethnic groups listings though even communities without any significant Visible minorities have a table, even if it's full of only zeros and single-digit hard numbers; West Van may have an ethnic groups table on teh public part of the site; in most cases those figures are only available with pay-for census reports.Skookum1 (talk) 00:29, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
