Practical research 1
[edit]Research topic: strategies to overcome the challenges faced by single mother: A study in poblacion mankayan Background of the study Being a single mother is extremely challenging, as it involves the overwhelming responsibilities of raising children, managing finances, and balancing work and family life. Single mothers often find it difficult to provide for their families and secure their well-being, with the situation being particularly tough in areas like Poblacion Mankayan, Benguet where access to education, employment opportunities, and social services is limited. (Evergene S. Ramos & Jhoselle Tus, 2020) According to McLanahan (2005), single motherhood refers to the social phenomenon where a woman raises children alone, without the presence of a male partner, encompassing situations like divorce, widowhood, or single parenthood by choice. The number of single-parent households has increased dramatically in recent years. In the Philippines, where this study is being conducted, the situation is no different. According to Philippines Statistics Authority (2020) found that approximately 23% of households in the country are headed by single parent. (United Nations Children’s Fund, 2020) According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (2019), the number of single-parent households in the Philippines has increased by 25% over the past five years. In Poblacion Mankayan, Benguet, the situation is particularly dire, with an estimated 30% of households headed by single mothers. According to World Bank (2018), it is found that single mothers in rural areas face significant barriers to accessing education, employment opportunities and social services. Despite the growing number of single parent households, there is a lack of research focused specifically on the challenges faced by single mothers in rural areas. Most studies have been conducted in urban settings, and the findings may not be applicable to rural communities with limited access to resource and services. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the challenges faced by single mothers in Poblacion Mankayan, Benguet. Key research questions guiding this study includes: What are the primary challenges faced by single mothers?, What coping strategies do they employ to overcome those challenges?, and How do they handle their financials for being a single mother? This study aims to contribute meaningful insights into the experience of single mothers in Poblacion Mankayan, highlighting both their struggles and their resilience. By focusing on the lived experiences of single mothers, the research seeks to understand the needs and essential support required to help them succeed in their parenting journey. Statement of the problem General problem: this study attempts to document the challenges faceda by single mothers in Poblacion, Mankayan, Benguet and how these challenges affect their way of life. Specific problem: 1.What are the challenges faced by the single mother? 2.What strategies or intervention to overcome this challenges? Significance of the Study: School: This study will help schools understand the challenges that single mothers and their children face. By knowing these issues, schools can create support programs, like counseling or parenting workshops, to help both students and their parents. Additionally, teachers can include lessons about single motherhood, which will promote understanding and kindness among students. Schools can become places where the hardships of single mothers are recognized, fostering a sense of community. Students: this study highlights the importance of support from friends and the community. By bringing attention to the challenges these students face—like financial struggles or emotional stress—teachers and classmates can create a more caring school environment. The findings may also inspire students to start their own support groups or activities that help peers who are going through similar experiences, promoting friendship and strength. Family: The study is important for the families of single mothers. It can help family members understand the specific difficulties their loved ones encounter, such as balancing work and home life or dealing with financial pressure. This understanding can improve communication and strengthen family relationships. The study may encourage families to seek community resources that can further support single mothers, leading to healthier family dynamics. Community: this study emphasizes the need to create a welcoming environment for single mothers. By identifying the social and economic challenges they face, community leaders can develop programs that meet their unique needs, such as job training, childcare, and mental health services. Raising community awareness can lead to collaborative efforts to support single mothers and their families. Additionally, the research can be used to advocate for local policies that improve the quality of life for single mothers, benefiting everyone in the community. Scope and Delemination of the study The scope of this study focuses on the strategies to overcome the challenges faced by single mothers in Poblacion, Mankayan, Benguet. It examines the economic, emotional, and social challenges experienced by single mothers, including financial instability, emotional stress, societal stigma, and limited access to resources. The study further explores the coping mechanisms and support systems they utilize, such as community support, family assistance, and personal resilience strategies. The research is geographically limited to Poblacion, Mankayan, providing localized insights into the specific struggles and solutions relevant to the area. The study is also temporally bound, focusing on the experiences of single mothers over the past two years to ensure the findings are relevant and reflective of recent conditions. By identifying the unique challenges and strategies within this context, the research aims to contribute to a better understanding of the lives of single mothers and to propose practical recommendations for support programs and policies that can improve their well-being. This study will focus specifically on single mothers living in the Poblacion area. We have chosen to limit our research to this location for several important reasons. First and foremost, we need to consider the practical aspects of conducting the study. Single mothers from nearby areas, such as Balili, Bulalacao, Guinaong, and Tabio, will not be included because these places are quite far away. Traveling to these locations would take a lot of time and resources, which we currently do not have. By focusing on the Poblacion area, we can better understand the unique challenges and experiences of single mothers in this specific community. Each community has its own set of circumstances that can greatly affect the lives of single mothers, so studying just one area allows us to dive deeper into those experiences instead of trying to cover too much ground. Additionally, this study will only include single mothers who are the primary caregivers for their children. This means we want to hear from those who take on the main responsibility for raising their kids. By focusing on this group, we can gather more relevant and meaningful information about their lives. Participation in our study will be voluntary, meaning that only single mothers who feel comfortable and willing to share their stories will take part in the interviews or surveys. This willingness is important because it ensures that the information we collect reflects the true experiences and feelings of the participants. By establishing these boundaries, we aim to create a clear and focused study that will provide valuable insights into the lives of single mothers in Poblacion.
