Historical errors

[edit]

Dittmer p. 657 noted:

  • The assertion that Ulysses S. Grant took Vicksburg, Mississippi "with a coordinated river and land assault" on July 4, 1863 is a historical error. (see Battle of Vicksburg which shows it was a siege lasting forty days ending on July 4)
  • James K. Vardman is misidentified as "Thomas" K. Vardman
  • It stated that Freedom Riders were given good meals in prison facilities in the South, also a mistake

p. 658 stated that these are "errors of interpretation":

  • they implied that there was "a Mississippi movement masterminded by a handful of dedicated outsiders", citing the author's statements about Mississippi Free Press and stating that James Forman was a "chief [peer]" of Bob Moses
