Significant Updates

[edit]

I’ve significantly expanded and reorganized the Wawona Hotel page to provide a more detailed and comprehensive account of its history, architecture, and cultural significance. These updates were inspired by my trip to Yosemite last year, as well as the recent news that the Wawona Hotel will be closing indefinitely in December 2024 for repairs. The closure highlighted the importance of preserving the story of this historic landmark.

The history section now includes detailed subheadings, covering its origins as Clark’s Station in the 1850s, the Washburn family’s stewardship, and its transformation into a Victorian-era resort. I’ve added information about its role as a stagecoach hub, the creation of the Wawona Tunnel Tree, and the transition to the automobile era, including key modernizations under Clarence Washburn.

The architecture section now highlights the hotel’s Greek Revival, Stick-Style, and Eastlake design elements, as well as its preservation as one of the largest intact Victorian-era resorts in a national park. The grounds section has been expanded to include the structured layout of the buildings and their integration with the natural landscape. The amenities section now features additional details on the historic Wawona Golf Course, California’s first mountain course, operating since 1918, along with citations that were missing before.

Notable guests, including U.S. presidents and Hollywood stars, are now listed to highlight the hotel’s cultural significance.

These changes aim to preserve and showcase the Wawona Hotel’s legacy, ensuring its rich history is documented and accessible for future generations, especially during this uncertain period of closure.

Build date confusion

[edit]

The article says it was built in 1865 and 1879. Which was it? --Ragemanchoo82 (talk) 21:24, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
