"A loosely knit group of hippies called the "Rainbow Family" arrived in Waveland soon after Hurricane Katrina. From early September 2005 to early December 2005, they ran the "New Waveland Cafe & Clinic" located in the parking lot of Fred's Dept Store on Hwy 90." Wasn't it a church from Orange Beach that started the Waveland Cafe & Clinic? - Ben

No a Christian group from Bastrop Texas started "The New Wavland Cafe". When taking a break for supplies ran up with one of the Rainbow folks (Felipie) who was scouting for a new site to help (I was in anouther caravan to join him). BCOC asked for help and we helped. It would be more proper to say that BCOC started it but Rainbow volenteered to help them (but ended up being the bigger volenteer) rather than the other way around as it currently states. Thanks, Hawker, for responding. I built and ran the New Waveland Clinic for the entire time it was open (3 months, Sept to Dec 05) and was present during the entire duration of the Rainbow Family's relief efforts. BCOC volunteers usually didnt volunteer in the clinic, but occationally a nurse or doc would contact me through them in order to volunteer their services. Bstone 00:20, 11 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I should add, however, that BCOC was absolutely instrumental in the relief efforts. They volunteered in the kitchen and ran a free clothing/good give away for the residents of Hancock County. They are truly angles. Especially Pete and Fay Jones. Bstone 21:25, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

City and Town History

[edit]

Has anyone considered writing a section on the city and town history in more depth? Founding date of the city (1972), the establishment of the town or region (from the 1600s?). I know a little about the "ancient history" of some of the early residents, but only because I was born there (as were half of my ancestors). I know less about the more recent history (mayors and other elected people), but that might be an interesting thing to include. I could only name one past mayor though: Garfield Ladner, who was mayor when Camille hit.

Also, does anyone have information about the islands offshore?

I have lots of old photos of Waveland and Bay St. Louis, and some old newspaper articles. I would have to scan the old photos if there is any interest, and I could summarize some of the relevant newspaper articles. I suspect the copyrights have expired on the newspaper articles by now anyway.
