Article tone
[edit]@Thornton2021, Howyoodoon, and Airalednac:: you all are a strange bunch. Three editors solely devoted to a single article. Have any of you read Sob sister (journalism)? There's an example of their writing style in the Thaw murder trial section of the article. The reason that I mention it is that many of the edits you three have made seem reminiscent of that florid, overwrought writing style so popular in the early 20th century.
Please avoid adjectives, adverbs, hyperbole, and promotional writing. This is an encyclopedia. Keep it simple and factual. Thank you. Schazjmd (talk) 16:32, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
@Schazjmd - Hi- We the strange bunch are the children of Walter Thornton trying to contribute much more information on who our father was (except howyoodoon). There is so much disinformation about him even in published books that we just wanted to contribute a little more about him. Everything we are adding is factual and have personal knowledge and/or sources to back it up and we have the archives of his modeling agency. I guess we are really bad at writting it in the manner required and are really unfamiliar with the wikipedia site so we really do appreciate your comment and in-put. I don't even know if I am putting this comment in the right place:-( Any help is truly appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thornton2021 (talk • contribs) 20:56, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation, Thornton2021! Now it makes more sense (and yes, you posted in the right place). Please, if there is any additional information that you believe should be added to the article, post it here (with a reliable source) and I'll see about incorporating it. Keep in mind that nothing can be based solely on personal knowledge; we only accept published reliable sources. The idea is that any reader of the article can check the sources we cite to verify the information we provide. I'm sure you must be very proud of your father's achievements. @Schazjmd Would you be so kind, and give us a hand with the tone to match the encyclopedia requirements? We do have more information/sources. But for now we would like to fine tune what we have so far. Thank you so much in advance :) Airalednac (talk) 23:06, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
- Let me ping @Discospinster:, who placed the maintenance tags: Discospinster, could you take a look at the changes I've made to the article and let me know if you think there are any remaining areas that still need work for tone and promotion? Thanks! Schazjmd (talk) 23:20, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
- I think it's OK to remove the tag at this point. ... discospinster talk 03:39, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
"Merchant of Venus"
[edit]I remove the Winchell label of "Merchant of Venus". A quick newspapers.com search shows that Winchell used that phrase for a lot of people, and I haven't found sources that Thornton was known by that label otherwise. Schazjmd (talk) 23:30, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
