French ships

[edit]

The French ships listed here did not exist. Le Mieta does not remotely sound French and, unsurprisingly, I could not find and ship by this name. "Saint Sprit" probably means Saint Esprit, which is a name reserved for larger units, not frigates; the Saint Esprit of 1691, which was active in 1708, was a 74-gun. Where does this list come from? Saint Esprit, correction

[edit]

I have no information on the other French ships but as far as ruling out the presence of the "Saint Esprit" is concerned I'm afraid you are totally wrong. The name "Saint Esprit" was used several times in this period for privateer frigates from Saint-Malo. Captain Gris du Colombier, later a prominent ship-owner, sailed the 200 ton "Saint Esprit" in the period 1688-1695. A second ship of the same name, 350 tons, 34 cannons, Captain Alain Porée, was among the more succesfull privateers before taking part (1703-1705) in the first commercial voyage around Cape Horn. Either this ship or another of similar dimensions was captained by Claude Raoul for a voyage to Vera Cruz leaving Brittany in July 1707. Details of his voyage are to be found among the Vernon Papers in the British Library. There is some recent serious work in English(The Treasure of the San Jose, Philipps, 2007)which may shed more light on the subject.92.139.245.190 (talk) 13:21, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

San Jose location found

[edit]

The "Legacy" para begins by categorically stating that the location of the San Jose has been found -- only to then go into an example of how nothing has been found at the reported location and generally leaving the reader somewhat confused as to whether the wreck has in fact been definitely found or not. I have straightened out this ambiguity by changing the first line of the para to, "It is claimed that the San Jose has been found..." Certainly nothing has been salvaged.

                * Vulture (28 guns), fire ship under Commander Caesar Brooks This vessel was armed with 28 guns, not 8.

I am not able to make changes to this reference. Would someone make this correction please. Mr Anderson51 (talk) 20:18, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

G'day, can you please provide a source that supports this change (e.g. a website, journal article or a book)? Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 00:24, 26 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
