Early days of MSN, the Michigan State University All-Campus Radio Network
[edit]WKME in Shaw Hall (where I started in campus radio in the fall of '66)
WBRS in Brody Hall (wkme and wbrs always argued over who was first on the air)
WOND in Wonders Hall complex
WFEE in Fee-Acres complex
WEAK also in Acres, IIRC
and the network central station
WMSN, in the basement of Student Services, one station to bind them all ... or so the affiliates claimed we were trying to do. Looks like it happened.
I think we went on the air from the "new" central station (WMSN) first in early January, 1968. Might have been earlier, because we were on the air in the fall of '67 (transmitters in those dorms without stations were installed during that summer); we were off the air over Christmas break of '67, and then built the station in ~140 sleepless hours once MSU Receiving delivered all of the ordered equipment which they'd stored up over break, thinking there was no one to accept it at the station. We were definitely on the air in 1968, I announced the death of MLK from the dj's chair in main, having first locked the station doors.
Maybe this should go into an article about the history of MSN. I've no RS for this, I was just there. You may find an air check of Dane Errickson or Hairy Heffalump; guilty. htom (talk) 02:42, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
