The introduction reads like a investment advertisement full of PR jargon. I added a tag but it was removed by 194.251.142.28, He's made well over 100 edits to this article and very little else over the past few years:

Whois says the IP belongs to Wartsila (big surprise). I'm not sure how to add the "This article is pretty much an ad" banner and make it stick, but it is needed. Adam850 (talk) 06:15, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

WOrg txt: 'Wärtsilä is a Finnish manufacturer of power plants (mainly diesel-powered) for use in electricity generation and ship power, and associated services. The company's headquarters is located in Helsinki.'

I think is the other way: Wärtsilä is a manufacturere op large (diesel) engines and power plants... The core business of Wärtsilä still is marine diesel engines!! (edit by User:81.58.156.57)

Please feel free to correct mistakes in the article. Pavel Vozenilek 23:56, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Added information to make it clearer about the divisions/markets (edit by User:217.195.248.66 19:04, 23 June 2014 (UTC))[reply]

power

[edit]

In the engines article it says that the The largest version produces up 84.4 MW rather than the 80,080 kW (107,400 HP) claimed in this article? /discuss -- 194.11.79.103 (talk) 00:13, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The difference may be from where the power is measured – which of course should be mentioned when giving exact figures. --LPfi (talk) 11:31, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

I believe this article requires it, any Finnish speakers around to help out? --98.164.85.134 (talk) 14:55, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Like (nearly) always in Finnish the pronunciation is straight forward: stress on first syllable, one sound per letter (and W is equal to V), short when the letter isn't doubled. I'm not good at IPA, but checking Finnish language I would guess at ['værtsilæ]. --LPfi (talk) 15:22, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Shipbuilders

[edit]

Wärtsilä were also shipbuilders - see MV Danny F II - but no mention of this is in the article. Mjroots (talk) 08:33, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I put a sentence or two about that in the marine section, sadly without sources (the years are from svwiki). I vaguely remember that 1/3 of the world's icebreakers in the 1980's were Finnish made, probably built at the Helsinki shipyard (I found a dozen Wärsilä made Russian icebreakers here at Wikipedia). The former Wärtsilä shipyard in Turku now building the largest cruise ships of the world is possible because of the cruiseferry traffic between Finland and Sweden and the preference for domestic shipyards at the time. --LPfi (talk) 11:24, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is now a hat link for the shipyard history, but it seems the history is divided between two these two articles. It should probably go into one of the two, or in a new one. --LPfi (talk) 15:25, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The most significant yards of Wärtsilä were the old Turku yard (former Crichton-Vulcan), Perno yard in the outskirts of Turku (today formarly called Turku Shipyard, as it is the only remaining one in the city; see the article in Finnish), Hietalahti shipyard and Vuosaari yard in Helsinki (the latter one was closed almost immediately when Wärtsilä got it) and the Kotka yard. There is an article about the sad end of Wärtsilä shipbuilding in Finnish, see fi:Wärtsilä Meriteollisuus.
I find it best to write briefly about the shipbuilding on this article and then more on the yard specific articles. Would be good also to translate Wärtsilä Meriteollisuus (it was called Wärtsilä Marine in English). --Gwafton (talk) 11:55, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
At least the history section should include the most important events of the shipbuilding (that ended to the spectacular bankruptcy in October 1989 and was continued by a new company Masa-Yards, see STX Finland for more details); currently there's no mention of shipbuilding in the history section. The company has during the years also had a number of other activities, in addition to shipbuilding and engines.
The history chapter should also be written in plain prose and moved to the correct place in the beginning of the article; now it's just a bullet list with items selectively copied from a list at the company website. --Sivullinen (talk) 16:53, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request its removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
