PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT: I made the seiyū separate because I don't believe we want Japanese VAs getting mixed up with the American ones. Emperorbma
So what are German Voice Actors called if the Japanese Voice Actors have their own article? 68.196.48.208 (talk) 15:41, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Trim notable voice actors
I really think we should trim the "notable voice actors" list. I would prefer avoiding actors who have only voiced one role in one show (Yeardly Smith, Julie Kavner) and concentrate more on those that have the ability to voice hundreds of voices in dozens of shows (Hank Azaria, Phil Lamarr, Lauren Tom, Tress MacNeil, Billy West, Kath Souice, Mark Hamil). 129.42.208.182 22:18, 20 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- I politely disagree. Having only voiced one character does not necessary make one "un-notable." Certainly actors whose voice has been heard on a popular show for 15 years are notable...? At least IMHO that would be like saying Letterman or Leno or even Mr. Ed are not notable personalities in their field, having only been on one show. I agree that the list may perhaps be a bit long, but the number of shows someone has performed in doesn't seem to be directly related to how "notable" they are. To me anyway... TrbleClef 23:27, 20 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- I agree with TrbleClef above, but the "notable voice actors" section is still too large for me. It looks less like a listing of notable talents, and more of a list of every talent who ever appeared in a show a Wikipedian has ever watched. I'd argue "notable" should mean someone more along the lines of someone who has a big rep or name clout or something like that in the voice-over industry, or maybe a few historical names. If we need a list of everyone who has ever done a voiceover job, we can have a Wikipedia category. As an aside, in the example above, David Letterman has actually hosted three talk shows, not one: The late night shows for NBC and CBS, and a short lived morning show on NBC (which preceded the NBC Late Night show.) -- SterlingNorth 20:52, 30 May 2005 (UTC)
- There already is a Wikipedia category Voice actors and has been for at least a year. Unless I see some objection in the next week or so, I'm going to start culling the list. Caerwine 18:11, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
- "I Beat You To the Punch". I slashed the list of any voice artist only known for minor work, or voiced characters your average American would not recognize. That purged the list entiely of redlinks (except for Townsend Coleman, who I stubbed, and Peter Fernandez, who I redirected to Speed Racer). I also added a few who were surprisingly missing from the list (Grace Stafford and Sterling Holloway). As far as people who have only done one or two voices, I kept htem only if their one voice is very well known (the Simpsons voice actors and Arthur Q. Bryan, for example) --FuriousFreddy 15:40, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

Merge from Seiyū?
It has been proposed that seiyū (an article about voice actors in Japan) be merged into this article. Please visit Talk:Seiyū and offer your opinion. — Amcaja 21:04, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
Replaced template
Ned Scott removed the merge template, saying that he felt that the expansions to the Seiyū article sufficed to distinguish a seiyū from voice actor. I still disagree. Basically, what I'm seeing right now is that voice acting in Japan is similar to voice acting in the United States during the days before television. This was the era of radio, when radio stations had troupes of voice actors on staff who themselves became quite famous. Like I said, I'll wait until there's more, but for now, I still don't see why a split is necessary. (Though I do applaud the translators; seiyū is showing what voice actor ought to look like.) — Amcaja 17:19, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
- that is not what I said. I said Seiyū is a different article than when it was originally nominated for a merge, and that if anyone still felt it should be merged to just put back the template, as you have. -- Ned Scott 02:12, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
- Whatever. Sorry for putting words in your mouth/characters on your screen. — Amcaja 03:19, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
- The article translation still has a very long way to go and I would like to reiterate Nihonjo's request that the decision to merge be put off until a longer portion of the article can be finished. (See the Seiyuu talk for my todo list.) --Kunzite 04:47, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
- Quick resolution is still not out of the question. My doubts about the validity of a separate seiyū article have at least been lessened by seeing the lengthy "to do" list regarding the article translation. If someone involved in the translation can write a three- or four-paragraph summary of the article and integrate it into voice actor, I'll retract my request for a merge. Such a move would satisfy summary style guidelines and wouldn't shirk countering systemic bias. Include a couple sources for the information (assuming the Japanese article cites them), and boom, done. Would that be possible? (Incidentally, voice actor should probably be moved to voice acting, with seiyū at voice acting in Japan, but one has to pick his battles. ;) — Amcaja 12:50, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
I think we need to get a larger portion of the article translated before we try a summary. --日本穣 17:20, 13 March 2006 (UTC)Strike that. I added a short paragraph and a link. Feel free to edit it if you wish. (^_^) --日本穣 17:39, 13 March 2006 (UTC)- Good enough for me. I understand the tendency for Japanophiles (among whom I include myself) wanting to split everything Japanese off into its own article, but I hope that by doing things per summary style guidelines we can retain the idea that voice acting is a worldwide phenomenon that does not fundamentally change from culture to culture. I also strongly believe that per the Use English guideline, seiyū should be moved to voice acting in Japan. But, like I said, pick your battles. — Amcaja 19:53, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
- No. We do not merge Culture of Japan and Culture of United States under Culture.
- Whenever people care to talk about voice acting in japan the correct term is seiyū as per wikipedia guidelines. seiyū is the most popular term used in adressing voice acting in japan at the very least among anime fans, people who actualy care about voice acting in japan. I'd love to see a source for your 99% statistic.
- I am sick and tired of random people spending all their time in attemting to move everything related to japan under a more general title. First it was Kawaii and now this...

- Umm, you're a little late to the table, Cool Cat. This was decided over a month ago, with the merge template being removed on March 13. --日本穣 Nihonjoe 20:55, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Link spam
There's a lot of spam links here and on Voice-over which should perhaps be removed. Sum0 19:21, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
- I removed a couple others which were added following the above post. One in particular -- http://www.audiofarm.org/audiofiles/genre/Voice%20Acting -- is a site for amateur voice actor clips and does not belong on this page.
- I added a few other sites which are among the more popular sites related to voice acting:
Voice Actors in the News - http://voiceactors.wordpress.com/ Behind the Voice Actors - http://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/ - a quality fan site with voice comparisons for cartoon and videogame voices. VoiceActing.com - very popular instructional site on voice acting Voiceroy (talk) 21:43, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Voiceroy
- I'm going to suggest removing the external link to voiceoverindex as they are clearly a commercial website, but more importantly are selling links on their home page. Look in the footer and you'll see "List in a PR6 Web Directory for Free! This site is listed under Audio Directory". If no one objects, I'll remove the link in 7 days. List of famous voice actors
I removed this section as it was about as it had become a long distraction from the contents and provided no context for list members. We have a separate article List of notable voice actors, we already seemd to contain all the members of the list. I think we shoud leave the list there. -- SiobhanHansa 00:08, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
Fan Dub
Patrolling the newpages list, I came across Fan Dub. It makes sense to move that to Fandub which is a current redirect to this article. What do you think about this? Martijn Hoekstra 16:00, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
Audiobooks?
Should a section be added for audio book readers? 70.59.70.244 (talk) 08:25, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
- I agree. It's definitely a subgenre of voice acting. Voiceroy (talk) 21:45, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Voiceroy
- While I'd personally consider audiobooks more in the narration category, I agree that acting is definitely required for multi-character performances. Would someone consider adding the following about audiobooks "Audio books, also known as books on CD or tape, can be a helpful tool for: those who are traveling and need to catch up on important information, for the visually impaired, or for those who just enjoy listening to books rather than reading through them." Davidciccarelli (talk) 00:49, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Globalize
I've tagged the article with Globalize. Apart form the lead and the pic, the article only mentions voice acting in the U.S. and Japan. I understand that those might be the largest markets (are they?) but other countries should still be mentioned.--Cattus talk 10:55, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
Salary?
Shouldn't there be a section on how much money a voice actor is paid? Angie Y. (talk) 23:39, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
- I agree as well. Here's an op/ed article for reference:
http://voiceactors.wordpress.com/2009/04/27/how-much-do-voice-actors-earn/
- There is a detailed discussion about rates here:

Section on Philippine voice acting
The section of Philippine voice acting seems to be ripped straight from a PR. Perhaps it can be edited and fixed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wangjing13 (talk • contribs) 09:14, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
- I edited the Phillipine section to remove the fluff, but it's now down to a couple of trivial factoids. The section could probably be removed altogether, unless someone wants to expand on it properly. MrBastian (talk) 22:57, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
