The coat of arms
[edit]in his book about "Somererset and all the Maughams" the second viscount states that an inquiry by Garter Herald suggested that the Maughams had never been armigerous and that the coat of arms with the lion rampant and the broken sword (used here as a crest) was an invention by a heraldic amateur... The book prints the exchange of letters with the herald and the proposed letter to the Earl Marshall asking for a coat of arms and the supporters that a viscount is entitled to . It also states that aquiring such arms would cost £222,-.Therefore the viscount decided that he "would be a peer without a coat of arms".
It makes me wonder, are these the proper arms of either viscount Maugham? Robert Prummel (talk) 01:07, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
