Why is this man notable
[edit]Why is this man notable? Why is there a Wikipedia article about him? KDS4444Talk 11:52, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
- Submit it to an AFD if you must, but coaching the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team (see {{Notre Dame Fighting Irish football coach navbox}}) is a pretty good start. 67.101.5.205 (talk) 00:51, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- Check me: Mr. Place coached one (1) season for Notre Dame for nine games with eight wins and one loss; he never coached for anyone else (http://www.databasefootball.com/College/coaches/coachpage.htm?CoachID=5150). There are 30 or so coaches listed at Notre Dame's football website coach page (http://www.und.com/sports/m-footbl/archive/nd-m-fb-a-coach.html). If there were a standalone Wikipedia article for every coach from every college in the United States for every sport in the history of the nation, there would be 10,000 Wikipedia articles about coaches-- and that concerns me. I do believe that this kind of information should be recorded on Wikipedia, but not as a standalone article. It makes sense to me that there should be a list of all Notre Dame football coaches within a single Wikipedia article. Thoughts? KDS4444Talk 03:53, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
- Follow-up: I have reviewed WP:NSPORT which states:
- "College athletes and coaches are notable if they have been the subject of non-trivial media coverage beyond merely a repeating of their statistics, mentions in game summaries, or other WP:ROUTINE coverage. Examples would include head coaches, well-known assistant coaches, or players who: 1.) Have won a national award (such as those listed in Template:College Football Awards or the equivalent in another sport), or established a major Division I (NCAA) record, 2.) Were inducted into the hall of fame in their sport (for example, the College Football Hall of Fame), or 3.) Gained national media attention as an individual, not just as a player for a notable team." Mr. Place, like most of the coaches for Notre Dame and dozens of other schools who have had standalone articles written for them, does not appear to meet WP:NSPORT nor WP:GNG. Since my proposal for deletion was disputed, it looks like I must now take it through the AfD process-- unless I am convinced otherwise (an option to which I am very much open).
