Although his AP obituary gave his age as 87, and Total Hockey lists his birth year as 1919, the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame site (which is tough to navigate) gives it as 1915, which would make his years as a student at Michigan more reasonable. In fact, he was born in 1912. Several members of the Society for International Hockey Research (SIHR) were not convinced by the 1919 birth year -- it would have meant he was 15 when he began playing for Michigan. Through HeritageQuest, we were able to find an entry in the 1920 U.S. Census (series T625, roll 715, page 171) for the Heyliger family, which listed Victor as being seven years old. As the census would have been conducted in January, this pointed to 1912 as Heyliger's birth year. There has long been some confusion: an April 11, 1957, New York Times report about his retirement from coaching at Michigan placed him at 41. Meanwhile, a December 5, 1941, article in the Chicago Tribune ("Heyliger Sees Big Future for College Hockey; Illini Coach Says It May Rival Golf") describes him as a "dark haired 28 year old Yankee."
