What are these things?

The article isn't clear about what these things are before it starts to give details. (I had to go through a bunch of links to get an idea.) Are these extinct? (They seem to be part of a larger group that is extinct but doesn't say so and doesn't list what era they lived it.) Are they colonies of single-celled organisms?
