The result of the move request was: no consensus for move. Favonian (talk) 18:43, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
Verónica Boquete → Veronica Boquete – Reliable sources such as her professional league, FIFA, and local media all spell her name without the accent. We should match. (N.B.: the target title was a redlink until I just created it, contrary to our clear guidelines at WP:DIACRITICS.) Powers T 18:15, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose. No established usage. HandsomeFella (talk) 09:40, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
- I provided three examples of established usage, from three reliable sources. What more are you looking for? Powers T 12:18, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose. WIkipedia does not encourage nor discourage diacritics. In this case, the subject is a Spanish national without great prominence outside of her own country until very recently, it seems. All the sources in the article use the form of name with diacritics. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 09:31, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- That's just not true. First of all, the four (out of five) that do use the diacritics are Spanish. We do not use Spanish-language sources to determine the English-language title of our articles. Second of all, the one source that is in Englisnh -- her official player page -- doesn't use diacritics, as I already mentioned in the nomination. Powers T 14:38, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
- Support. This name is given without diacritics by the Boston Globe and by the New York Times. Kauffner (talk) 16:32, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose per encyclopedic practice and proper English. Wikipedia is not a newspaper or a sports organization. Prolog (talk) 20:47, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- It's not up to us to decide what her name is in English. Every English-language source I've found so far spells her name without diacritics. Powers T 22:53, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- Per authoritative sources, her actual name is also the correct spelling of the name in English. It makes no difference how many sources you can find for a misspelling. Prolog (talk) 23:45, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- Just what do you consider authoritative, then, if not the web site for her employer? Powers T 12:49, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- CMoS, AMA and APA are authoritative sources on the English language. Football teams are not. Prolog (talk) 15:53, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- ... and what do they have to say about the spelling of Veronica Boquete's name? Powers T 16:45, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- Style manuals are not dictionaries. Spanish personal names must be spelled correctly as a matter of house style. Prolog (talk) 18:01, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- I believe you are misinterpreting our house style. WP:AT, which is policy, states: "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources." Every reliable English-language source spells her name without diacritics; that, thus, is the name we should use, per policy. Powers T 18:08, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- Our de facto policy on this matter can be seen on Category:Spanish people (WP:NOTBURO, also a policy), and it is in line with other general-purpose encyclopedias. The idea that BLP titles should be decided through case-by-case Google popularity contests is a minority view in the community and completely nonexistent in serious publications. Prolog (talk) 18:22, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- What is the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources? Powers T 19:35, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- "Veronica Boquete" is not a name but a spelling that, while common in the mass media, is unsuitable for an encyclopedia. CMoS puts it well: "While common usage can excuse many slipshod expressions, the standards of good usage make demands on writers and editors." Prolog (talk) 20:27, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- For good or ill, we don't follow the Chicago Manual of Style, we have our own house style. WP:ENGLISH says, "[W]hen deciding between versions of a word which differ in the use or non-use of modified letters, follow the general usage in reliable sources that are written in the English language (including other encyclopedias and reference works)." Powers T 20:45, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- We indeed have a house style (actual established practice, as visible from the shortest stubs to featured articles) and it is firmly in line with the five pillars instead of anyone's favourite written rules, or interpretations thereof. Prolog (talk) 23:58, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

- Question - Have we got an example of an authoritative English-language source that uses the accent? Prolog, or anyone else, do you know of one? -GTBacchus(talk) 21:15, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- Authoritative English sources, as I see it, very rarely exist for even highly well-known active athletes. Enter style guides and the practices of other encyclopedias. However, I'll note that the claim that no English-language sources include the accent mark for this person turned out to be untrue. Prolog (talk) 23:58, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, I got tired of typing "I've found so far" every time. By the time I dropped it, I thought it safely assumed as a caveat to "every English-language source". Powers T 01:40, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

- Oppose, for all the usual reasons when requests of this kind are made - WP's consistent style is to include diacritics in the hundreds of thousands of cases like this, and to deviate from it in isolated cases on some random whim would be to do a disservice to (and even mislead) readers.--Kotniski (talk) 08:22, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
- It's not random whim, it's following the sources. Powers T 10:50, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, and that (in the sense you mean here) is not what we generally do, so you end up with a few articles that deviate from the standard for no particular reason except that the anti-diacritics brigade have had their teeth into them, thus leading to pointless random variation that has the potential to mislead readers.--Kotniski (talk) 13:17, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
- We don't follow sources? Someone needs to alert WT:Article titles! Powers T 13:24, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
- Sure, we don't follow sources in matters of typography, or we'd be all over the place. --Kotniski (talk) 14:10, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
- As other opponents of this move have pointed out, this isn't a matter of typography, it's one of spelling. Powers T 16:43, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
- OK, whatever it's a matter of, we don't necessarily imitate sources in such matters.--Kotniski (talk) 17:22, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
- According to WP:DIACRITICS, yes, we do. Powers T 17:54, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
