Not much, but http://www.armchairempire.com/videogame-news/multi-platform/July-2005/matrix-acquires-vassal-engine.htm contains some details. Article is dated 7/2005. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dcholtx (talkcontribs) 13:23, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, right that article. A very easy one to misinterpret, sadly (I've done it twice) with that headline. --Rindis (talk) 16:56, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

But this the vassal game engine in question. Did Matrix Games not purchase them. What is to misinterpret? Dcholtx (talk) 19:08, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm one of the developers of VASSAL. The headline and first paragraph of the article you're referring to are terribly misleading. I'll try to clarify what's wrong with it: The article seems to imply that we sold VASSAL to Matrix Games. We didn't sell the rights to the VASSAL codebase to anyone. Copyright over all of the code currently in our SVN repository still belongs to whomever wrote the code orignally, and it is all licensed under the LGPL.
What actually happened is that Matrix Games talked with Rodney (the founder of our project) about creating some proprietary extensions to VASSAL for distributing their games, which is permissible under the LGPL. As is remarked here, a more accurate title would be "Vassal Licensed For Non-Exclusive Use As A Game Design Tool For Publishers/Resellers". This post also does a good job of explaining the situation.
So, executive summary: The linked article is referring to the same VASSAL as the article here. The linked article is wrong to say that Matrix Games "acquired" VASSAL, in that most people would interpret that to mean "purchased". Uckelman (talk) 15:58, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As for non-web references, there was an article on VASSAL in the August 2007 issue of Games for Windows. It was covered in the "Line of Attack" column on p. 92. I've also had in my hands a French-language games magazine with an article in it comparing VASSAL and Cyberboard, which I could track down if someone wanted it.
