As the article exlains, is a stand-in for one of the fields and , with "F" probably intended to be reminiscent of field. This usage is quite common. (Though the symbol is probably even more commonly used in the same function, with "K" för Körper, the german term for field.) — Tobias Bergemann (talk) 13:46, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well... I guess no one will complain if I change it from to the more commonly used , right? Many people like to use for finite fields (or at least fields of non-zero characteristic)... Lenacore (talk) 12:32, 11 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
