"Vane display" appears to be a term invented by the original author of this article.[edit]

"Vane display" is not a widely used term, and I can find no uses of this term that predate this article's creation. Early patents refer to this technology as a rotating magnetically actuated display, and they are commonly known as electromechanical/electromagnetic seven-segment displays, or simply seven-segment displays.

The reason I am suggesting deletion rather than a rename is that under these new titles it becomes even more clear that this article should more properly be part of the seven segment display article. Indeed, the mechanism of operation of this type of display is already present in that article, as is information about flip-discs. Only the vague notion that this type of display was "used in game shows" would be lost.

Content fork of seven-segment display?[edit]

While the title of this article seems to indicate that it should be about the general category of display technology where colors/symbols are produced by the mechanical rotation of elements the author of this article is personally calling "vanes," in reality this article appears to only describe a specific type of seven-segment display.

The existence of this article is analogous to hypothetical individual articles for LCD, LED, VFD, and incandescent seven segment displays. Instead, these concepts are properly covered under Seven-segment_display#Implementations.

The notion that some seven segment displays operate by magnetically actuated rotating elements rather than LEDs is already present in the seven-segment display article, albeit unsourced and also infected by this article's potential neologism.

There may be room for an article describing electromechanical display technologies more broadly, perhaps merging in content from the Flip-disc_display article which suffers from similar deficiencies, though to a much lesser extent. UsrHungarianNotation (talk) 22:08, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
