Utkala = Ukkalā in the Pali canon

[edit]

There are a few mentions of Ukkalā in the Pali canon.

The merchants who first offered alms to the Buddha were from there: pli-tv-kd1:4.2.1": "Tena kho pana samayena tapussa bhallikā vāṇijā ukkalā taṁ desaṁ addhānamaggappaṭipannā honti. Just then the merchants Tapussa and Bhallika were traveling from Ukkala to that area.

Also two mysterious ascetics were from there: "an4.30:8.2": "Yepi te paribbājakā ahesuṁ ukkalā vassabhaññā ahetukavādā akiriyavādā natthikavādā, tepi imāni cattāri dhammapadāni na garahitabbaṁ na paṭikkositabbaṁ amaññiṁsu. "sn22.62:13.2": "Yepi te, bhikkhave, ahesuṁ ukkalā vassabhaññā ahetukavādā akiriyavādā natthikavādā, tepime tayo niruttipathe adhivacanapathe paññattipathe na garahitabbaṁ nappaṭikkositabbaṁ amaññiṁsu. ", "mn117:38.1": "Yepi te, bhikkhave, ahesuṁ okkalā vassabhaññā ahetuvādā akiriyavādā natthikavādā tepi mahācattārīsakaṁ dhammapariyāyaṁ na garahitabbaṁ nappaṭikkositabbaṁ amaññiṁsu. ", (in the latter it is spelled Okkala, probably just a typo.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.180.110.104 (talk) 05:34, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
