Una rivers in Brazil

I've checked your four new stubs on Brazilian Una rivers, only to find that they are pretty meager, and also that there are actually two Una rivers in Bahia. All of these seem fairly insignificant and their articles are trivial compared to the existing Una River article (about the 200km long river in .hr and .ba), so please either expand the new articles much further or revert the move, instead using partial disambiguation (on top of the existing article which would stay in the old place). --Joy [shallot] (talk) 09:52, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Joy,
I didn't create the articles about the rivers Una in Brazil, I just found them while I was looking for other meanings of the word "Una". You're right that the articles are very meagre, but from what I read in Portuguese wikipedia, the rivers aren't insignificant. For instance the one in Pernambuco (pt:Rio Una (Pernambuco)) is 255 (or 290) km long and flows through some large towns (e.g. Palmares, Pernambuco, pop. 58,000). I don't know about the rivers in Bahia. I will expand the Pernambuco article (found a good resource), and suggest we leave the Croatian-Bosnian Una where it is. I see User:Santasa99 moved "Una (Sava)" to "Una River (Bosnia and Herzegovina)". My reasons for moving it to "Una (Sava)" were:

  • the river is named "Una", "river" is not part of the name of this river
  • there are other meanings of the word "Una"
  • there are other, equally significant rivers named "Una"
  • this river is not the primary usage of the word "Una" in English
  • disambiguating by the water body the river flows into is a recommended method

Since the Una doesn't exclusively flow through Bosnia and Herzegovina (its source is in Croatia, and it forms the border between C and B&H for a big part of its length), I think the name Santasa99 chose is not accurate enough. I'll move it back to Una (Sava). If someone thinks a different name would be better, let me know. Markussep Talk 14:31, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There was a same issue about shared river articles in case of the river Tara (and the river Piva). The Tara spring out in Montenegro and flow through that country most of its course. Last 3o km or so the Tara enters Bosnia, but in original article written by some Montenegrin he obviously did not devote any attention to that fact. So I did something that enabled me to avoid confrontation with those interested in editing original article about river Tara in Montenegro, by starting a new article titled Tara River (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and of course, first explaining that river spring out and flow from Montenegro and enters Bosnia at some point and then focusing on interesting facts about part of the cours in Bosnia. Problem solved! Also I sugested that we change original article title from Tara River to Tara River (Montenegro) and that idea was accepted. So, I would preferred title that is less confusing especially if the Una river, which is probably more recognizable then its mouth the Sava river, is a quite significant not only for two neighbouring countries but for Balkan and Europe respectively. My sugestion is, then we should start yet another article titled Una River (Croatia) and maybe even specifically Vrelo Une (Una Spring). Until that happens, Sava should be removed from title at any cost; first of all River must be included (with capital letter R - WP:RIVER); Una (Sava) really doesn't mean anything, moreover its so confusing, actually. If nothing , Una River (Western Balkan) or Una River (Europe) is much better. I will divide this article to Bosnia and Croatia cause I would like to write about newly formed National Park Una and Unac (Una tributary), as soon as I catch some spare time.--Santasa99 (talk) 17:42, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I strongly recommend you not to create separate articles about sections of a river just because they're in different countries. We don't have different articles for the Rhine in Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Germany, France and the Netherlands, and we shouldn't have those either. In fact, I just merged the two articles about the Tara and the two articles about the Piva last week. No other encyclopedia does anything like that. The only good reason I can think of is if an article gets so big that you need subarticles. If information about the Bosnian part of the Tara is missing, add it, don't create another article. About "Tara River (Montenegro)", I see I'm to blame for that name, since I created the article in 2005. Then, I thought the river was completely on Montenegrine territory (bad map), hence the name. I don't see other page moves except my move to "Tara (Drina)" last week. WP:RIVERS doesn't say that "River" has to be included in the name, see this discussion. Disambiguation by confluence is really a common method, see for instance Vils, Aveyron (Loing), Lauter (Rhine). Anyway, if readers know the river Una, they're likely to know the bigger Sava, don't they? Markussep Talk 20:30, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
