Sinking anecdote

[edit]

The sinking of the Ramsden was accomplished by the USS Cocopa ATF-101 with her 3" gun. This was accomplished after the Ramsden was hit by two harpoon missles fired by a submerged submarine off of San Clemente island during a Sink-ex. The Harpoons did not explode but did hit her rendering her unsafe to tow. The Cocopa's captain then volenteered us to complete the task. We fired approximately 80 rounds at her broadside from about 500yards. It was real hoot. Every man aboard the Cocopa(except one) got a shot at aiming the gun. Our QM1 was an old salt who had riden her wbw, it was a very emotional moment for him. She really did howl and hiss as she went down. a picture of her just before the excercise commenced can be found here. Actually sinking was after sunset so I have no good pictures of that. The date was approximately September 1975 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Phredshome (talkcontribs) 20:43, August 14, 2008
