Sister Ships?

[edit]

The USS New Ironsides, was I think one of three such ships built. What were their names? Paul, in Saudi (talk) 23:21, 25 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As the article says, New Ironsides was "the last and largest of an initial group of three ... ironclads". The other two experimental ships were USS Galena and, most successful of the three, John Ericsson's USS Monitor. Only Monitor was repeated. Neither New Ironsides nor Galena had any sisters afloat. Angus McLellan (Talk) 00:37, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. The USS Galena article makes this quite clear in the first paragraph. Paul, in Saudi (talk) 01:06, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article on the David suggest that the damage from the spar torpedo was significant. I suspect in view of massive nature of Ironsides hull that this article is correct but is there more info available? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 157.203.255.2 (talk) 12:35, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm away from my sources, but I don't think that there's any additional info available. The most telling fact about any damage, IMO, is that the ship remained on station for a while longer, which implies that the damage was relatively minor.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 14:26, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OLD vs. NEW Ironsides

[edit]

I'm confused.

The article is titled "USS New Ironsides" but the infobox refers to "USS Old Ironsides". Is this an error? Wa3frp (talk) 17:34, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The issue is now resolved... see article historyWa3frp (talk) 22:06, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Action of 1 August 1863

[edit]

The Caledonian Mercury of 22 August 1863 states that a ship was sunk trying to leave Charleston on 1 August with the loss of all hands. Is the vessel's identity known? Mjroots (talk) 07:45, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
