[edit]

I have removed this unsourced comment from the main page, which was obviously put there by someone who was on the voyage described.

"The ship did not go to Vietman with the 101 Airborne in May of 1965. It left with the 35 Engineer Group Construction and broke down when it was 500 miles North of Midway Atoll and just across the international date line. It was towed to Midway and the troops were unloaded and transferred to the U S Navy ship Barrett for the remaining trip to Vietnam."

Perhaps someone can find a reference for this interesting piece of history later. Cuprum17 (talk) 16:16, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This information about the Eltinge is a true account. I was on this ill fated trip. I was in the 864th Engineer Battalion and we eventually arrived at Cam Rahn Bay on the Barrett after dropping dependents off in the Phillipines. We were adrift for several days and were eventually towed.108.36.136.31 (talk) 23:41, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I also was on the ship when it broke down...the above comment is 'almost' correct...it was the 84th Engineer Battalion out of Ft Ord, CA. No one has mentioned the 'shark' that circled us for days while we were adrift...a Russian war ship...pretty nerve racking! It was a joy to get to Midway!
