November 2006

[edit]

I think this ship was broken at Alang, and may not have been legal. I'm not sure http://www.pulitzer.org/year/1998/investigative-reporting/works/day3/1.html Thelude 07:44, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

named for?

[edit]

Is this ship named for the Battle of Bennington or Bennington (town), Vermont ? Many Essex class carriers are named for Revolutionary War battles so I'd guess the former, but the article states its the later. Cornell Rockey 14:50, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

USS Bennington was named for the Battle of Bennington, not the town. You statement is correct. (USS Bennington crewmember) sealord01@hotmail.com 67.191.98.114 (talk) 13:43, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Typhoon damage off Okinawa, 1945

[edit]

This might be worth a sentence or two. I'm unsure of copyrights on the photos, but surely there are some official photos: Typhoon damage, 1945. Pretty dramatic photos! --Pete Tillman (talk) 07:14, 29 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hornet was damaged in the same storm:

Looks like the first foto was an official USN foto, ie PD. I'll look for a cleaner copy, then post a bit to article + xref. Waves and Beaches calls it "very angry waves". Quite a storm! --Pete Tillman (talk) 16:59, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone know why this ship never became a museum ship? Because I really wish it did.

Movie Cameos!

[edit]

While just viewing the movie, "Battle of the Coral Sea", I noticed her cameo as she was seen via periscope. (Though Japanese music was played.) I checked to be sure it was not, CVE-20. Is that worth adding to the article? I've noticed that other ships have had their movie cameos mentioned. LeoStarDragon1 (talk) 00:43, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pirates incident?

Seems to be a hoax, they didn't enter undetected. Mantelmoewe (talk) 06:06, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
