Removed the phrase repeating that Tuam is offically a town, as I think it's already clear from the description that it's a town in Galway. This also makes my comment about the two cathederal read a little better. Aside, I went to school in Tuam, and always heard that it was the fact it had two cathederals was the defining factor in the rumour it was really a city, not just one. Also I recall that Blockbuster (the quiz show) had Tuam as the answer to a question smallest city in the world. Small town, big ambitions, eh? :) MartinRe 21:58, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Technically, there are tons of smaller cities worldwide. Some can have a population of only a few people. So if someone won that quiz show by answering "Tuam", they won it on false knowledge. But, a cathedral is no longer the foundation of a city, Drogheda, Monaghan and Clougher, but to name a few are all Irish towns/villages, not cities. 20:50, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

There is no mention of the legend surrounding St. Jarlath and the foundation of the town, or the fact it was once the seat of the high king of Ireland around the 12th century. (Leninbenjamin 12:19, 5 April 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Crimes

[edit]

In 1742 John Bodkin killed 11 members of his family and acquaintances at his father's house in Truam according to [this]. Might be worth mentioning, especially if he's related to John Bodkin Adams the suspected serial killer. Malick78 (talk) 21:27, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability

[edit]

There is not much point added every single person from Tuam who every wrote a book, song or poem to the notable people section. It is already overpopulated with people of only minor significance (eg McDonnell, Breathnach, Cunniffe,). Even though they have the distinction of Tuam! Quite a few in the list should be removed. Johnny Rotten's father was from Tuam, Johnny supposed had a few holidays in the town, hardly an endorsement for his inclusion in the list? Just because a 2 or 3 line biographical stub exists in wikipedia doesn't mean it has to be linked to this section. TuamPrefecture (talk) 11:00, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Too add any notable person related to a town within these lists appear to be common practice, see WP:NLIST. The only point is that notability must be given which is apparently given for Patrick Greaney as there exists an article for him. --AFBorchert (talk) 13:28, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That is true; a Wiki article is "proof" of notability. Thus, there are literally thousands of "notable" GAA club players on Wiki. And, therefore, every village (never mind a veritable metropolis like Tuam) will have it's sturdy band of "notables"! Sarah777 (talk) 13:33, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, at the end it would be better to transform such a simple list of links into some structured prose text where peoples are ordered by their occupations including possibly a subsection about club players. In such a context, it is also surely a good idea to start weighing the individuals. But as long this does not happen, these lists take their simple course through small edits adding another one from that town and all you can hope for that these added people are indeed notable. --AFBorchert (talk) 14:10, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Motto

[edit]

My husband, Garret Toomey of Dublin, believes the motto for the town where his ancestors came from is not "Long Live the People of Tuam," but is in fact, "Always Carry a Spare Chariot Wheel." Patricia O'Tuama.Risssa (talk) 01:48, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

sounds like an unquestionable source, patricia 2001:BB6:AB78:5400:1C58:1F17:1659:BFE2 (talk) 18:39, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
