Wrong year?

"Nine selections from the Right Track demos were unofficially released in 1994 as Purest Feeling; many of these songs would appear in revised form on Pretty Hate Machine in 1989 under the name Nine Inch Nails." - I guess this should read 1984 and not 1994? 83.76.219.78 (talk) 08:45, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Musical styles

An incredible musician, with an more incredible education concerning the musical styles, he turned from industrial rock to almost classic sounding stuff - something nobody can explain, and lately he did something i might call "film score influented" - if he is ok with it, I mean Trent himself ! :-)

He started out in classical music..

Johnny Cash cover

I removed the mention of Johnny Cash covering Hurt. It may be relevant on his entry or the NIN one, but not here. --MockTurtle 00:21, 13 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Peter Gabriel?

When and on what release did Trent work with Peter Gabriel? They just seem like an unlikely duo...

Trent did a remix on Peter Gabriel's "Growing Up" single. Twiin 22:13, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)

My browser exploded, and blanked the entry. Apologies. Twiin 22:21, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Did Trent make "at the heart of it all" ?.. im pretty sure aphex twin made the beats etc.

"At the Heart of It All" Its credited to Aphex Twin, it appears on his "...remixes for cash" disc. Along with "The Beauty of Being Numb".

Nothing records

On 18 October 2004 Trent said he had left Nothing records, does this mean he'll no longer be releasing albums with that label? If so, the main entry should be updated. I guess we might have to wait until With Teeth's release to be sure.

Brandy: Tell me that you aren't leaving Nothing Studios..
Trent: Too late, already gone. A lot of you have asked about the state of "nothing" in general, so here's a little info: as far as the record label, I will no longer have anything to do with it.

Midg3t 15:18, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Maybe he handed it all over to his partner.

I know he had a partner in the running of Nothing. I dont know the proper name of the guy, but im thinking its John A. Malm Jr., or Tony Ciulla(?)

just a possibility.

More Albums

I noticed that Pretty Hate Machine and Broken weren't mentioned, so I added them. Sure anyone could find that out from the NIN page, but I think they deserved mention here too.

Picture of Reznor

I noticed the picture of Reznor was taken down due to copyright issues. Although I understand the purpose, does it really matter if he cares whether or not its used in this context?

Just wondering. Ghost Freeman 22:05, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Working on Re-edit

This article isn't in terribly great shape at the moment. I'm working on a major overhaul. It'll include information on Reznor's childhood, pre-NIN work, and his work outside of NIN. Basically, I think this article should be about everything Reznor, except for much about NIN. That info belongs in the main NIN article.

I've begun by adding the remixes section. I've strictly split up the remixes between this article and the NIN article, depending on which name Reznor used in the album credits. A lot of them I don't own, so I based the split on the Reznor Discogs and NIN Discogs entries.

Similar to the remixes section, I plan to make a "solo work" and "record producer" section as well. --Tripps 18:21, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Rough draft of a new biography posted. Everything up to "Reznor was the credited producer for" is new. Needs more work and I still need to write his post-PHM life.

   # "Pleasant Smell (Rethought by Trent Reznor, Keith Hillebrandt and Clint Mansell)" for 12 Rounds, appears on Pleasant Smell (1998)
  1. "Pleasant Smell (Rethought by Keith Hillebrandt, Clint Mansell and Trent Reznor)" for 12 Rounds, appears on Pleasant Smell (1998)

Is there any deeper meaning in mentioning the track two times, or can one of them get deleted?

--roman 08:16 13 Mar 2005 (GMT+1)

Those are two different remixes on the disc with the titles given. The order of the remixers' names identify which mix is which. Rynne 05:57, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

The Machinist

Is Trent Reznor a reference to Trevor Reznik, the protagonist of the movie The Machinist, or is that name just coincidence? (clem 22:23, 13 May 2005 (UTC))

There is idle speculation in the NIN fan communities that the Machinist character may be a reference to Reznor, but there is no information to confirm or deny that idea. Rynne 17:16, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

No, but that's an interesting coincidence. His full name is Michael Trent Reznor, that's all.

i would say it's more than idle speculation, the book the film was based on is prefaced with quotes from "the downward spiral"... (HoS)

"The Machinist's writer, Scott Kossar, loves "Nine Inch Nails" and his original script had a quote from their lyrics on the first page. He always wanted the soundtrack to be written by NIN, but the director didn't want the movie to go in that direction. Nine Inch Nails' only official member is Trent Reznor, thus the name of Christian Bale's Character, Trevor Reznik."- from IMDB.com

1000 Homo DJs: not Trent?

Trent's vocal credit for the Supernaut EP may be suspect. See the 1000 Homo Djs article for more details. If anyone could provide a primary source citation, particularly an interview, that can refute Al's claim that it's his own vocals, it'd be useful in proving Trent's credit is correct. Rynne 06:13, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

Reznor vs. NIN

I've tried to fix some of the Reznor/NIN distinctions. First, I expanded the Quake part under Other Work with the material from Nine Inch Nails, because Reznor is credited for it (despite the NIN tributes).

Then in re-formatting that section I discovered all the other entries bar one are in fact credited to NIN so I removed all but the lost highway ones (which, since one is credited to Reznor, are of relevance).

I am about to research and determine whether the doom3 stuff in the NIN article belongs here instead.

-- Jon Dowland 17:41, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

Tate mansion

I'm pretty sure Reznor knew he was living in the Tate mansion--he calls the studio "le pig" in the Downward Spiral liner notes, and mentions in a recent interview that "It was cool when you had a party because everyone in the world wanted to come." An older interview mentions that he wasn't aware of the home's history at the time of purchase, though. -- Wapcaplet 20:40, 4 October 2005 (UTC)

Trent Reznor from early in his youth and now was affected with Manic Depression.

Could someone translate this line for me please?

Vocals on Pricks album

Didn't Trent sing at least backing vocals on 1 of the Prick songs? I'm at work and don't have the cd in front of me, but I'm pretty sure he did.

I'll dig out my copy, and get back to you. 67.84.174.163 02:57, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

So I found my CD. The song I was thinking of was "Other People" I would have sworn that Trent sang the "Other People" in the chorus and was credited as such. It sure sounds like it's Trent to me, but without any proper documentation....

He's not officially credited in the album notes, but to quote the old NIN faq:
In the December 1996 issue of Keyboard magazine, an interview with Trent mentioned that (to paraphrase him) "most of the backing vocals on the Prick album were me screaming from across the room". These tracks he refers to are the ones that he engineered and were apparently recorded in his bedroom during the Broken sessions. BotleySmith 18:47, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Denise Milfort??

I just read in the bio it mentioned that Trent was engaged to someone named Denise Milfort, just curiose who is this exactly? Also i haven't seen anything in the news that indicated he was even in a realtionship. Just wondering if who ever posted that could give a little more information, and source where they got the information.THANKS!

And if this is indeed true, I must say I am truly heartbroken :(

  • Thanks for pointing that out. That shouldn't be in the article. Denise Milfort is the vocalist on "La Mer" from The Fragile. I've never heard anything that would ever indicate that there was a realationship, let alone an engagement between her and Reznor. It'll be removed, until someone can come up with a very compelling and credible source. - Rynne 01:01, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Trivia

Does this article need such a lot of trivia entries? I believe some could be incorporated into the article, and others dispensed with. I mean, who cares how tall he is? The Trivia section should have a few noteworthy elements, say three to eight at most. Fatfingers 02:26, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Some of it could go.It doesn't matter that he likes Reese's Peanut Butter Cups! I think that his height should be included in trivia,though.--Happycat93 01:41, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Happycat93

I agree that the trivia section should be shorterned- many facts should be deleted(not including height cus i think people get curious :)-but couldnt we add other points, such as the fact that reznor has played a big part in the PETA organization and such? something to spread the news to fans?!

Yep.--Happycat93 14:51, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Happycat93

It's the trivia section. Trivia implies that a lot of it doesn't matter. Just keep it in there. I don't see anything wrong with the fact that he likes Reese's Peanut Butter Cups or that he's 5'6". Again, it's the trivia section. --Ubiq 12:08, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

While I quite like the trivia bits, is 'has no tattoos' really that interesting? Whats the point in stating what he doesn't have? You might as well add... 'doesn't have blonde hair, 'Doesn't have a pet horse named peacock.'

the phony webpage

Does anyone have material on the fake webpage that was up years ago (I can't remember its name for the life of me)? I wouldn't normally suggest adding a parody page to a Wikipedia article, but I think it ended up being used in some news stories about what he was doing, planning on doing, etc. I think it's at least as trivia-worthy as Reese's cups. Maybe? Solitary refinement 22:49, 7 April 2006 (UTC).

Latest vandalism

This evening someone at 83.236.169.18 (talk · contribs) reverted to an old vandalised version of the article from march - diff. Bloody vandals... --Imroy 09:02, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

--I'm not sure you mean me, but I tried to edit some stuff regarding errors found Here: Saxophone "Communiqué" for Lucky Pierre, appears on Communiqué (1988) "I Need to Get to Know" for Lucky Pierre, appears on Communiqué (1988)

and Here: Vocals "Communiqué" for Lucky Pierre, appears on Communiqué (1988) "I Need to Get to Know" for Lucky Pierre, appears on Communiqué (1988)

and got a threatening message in return, dubbing it "vandalism." Guess what? My changes were correct. I have the SELF TITLED PRICK album from 1995...it wasn't under Lucky Pierre, and it sure wasn't done in 1988. Oh, and also, there is no song called "I Need To Get to Know," it's called "Other People," just like I wrote.

How can it be vandalism if it is correct?Swykk 04:11, 13 December 2006 (UTC)Swykk--

Oops, sorry. Piping the Kevin McMahon link to 'Prick' looked like juvenile vandalism and I rushed to remove it. And that message is from July, so no it is not directed at you. --Imroy 04:54, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Is it cool for me to make those changes, then?Swykk 08:13, 13 December 2006 (UTC)Swykk

According to Kevin McMahon, Communiqué was a 1988 EP by the name Lucky Pierre... in which "I Need To Get To Know (Other People)" was a track.[1] I too own Prick's self-titled and it doesn't say that Reznor performed on these tracks, only that he engineered and produced 1, 3, 4, 5. The trivia that Reznor performed on those 2 EP tracks correspond to this listing, but I did not think that he was involved with Prick that early in his career. Pomte 09:10, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Bipolar disorder

I couldn't find a good reference for bipolar disorder, and I found this one that says he doesn't have it.

--If you read that article correctly, Trent says that the doctor told him he has an emotional disorder (bipolar disorder), except he only experiences the extreme lows of bipolar disorder without the extreme highs. So it says that Trent has bipolar disorder, but in a worse-than-normal way. Which was probably amplified in the past by large amounts of drugs and alcohol. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.138.128.55 (talkcontribs)

That would be depression, not bipolar, would it not? I seem to remember during the Fragile days reading something about a clinical depression diagnosis combined with social anxiety disorder. BotleySmith 22:59, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

John Malm, Jr.

i see that any references to his former manager, best friend, and co-founder of Nothing Records, have been removed. why? if this is an article on the person of trent reznor, rather than nin, isn't it notable that he sued this fomer 'best friend' and won a multi-million dollar suit against him? just curious. -- Denstat 18:03, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Tori Amos trivia

I vote to kill the whole part about 'Professional Widow' and Courtney Love, as it's a pretty far fetched interpretation, and (more importantly) has absolutely no relevance to Trent Reznor. qfwfq 12:35, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Drug and alcohol impact on his work

With all due respect to one's personal life, I still think we could include a section or more background on the impact of his drug and alcohol use on his music. I'll include some resources and some sections for other sites to use (I would add a section myself, but I am not the best writer and unsure about properly citing my work).

"Not now,” Trent responds quickly, breaking the lethargic pace at which he usually speaks. “There certainly was a time – the mid ‘90s when we blew up commercially – strange things happen to you. You can say as I did, ‘that won’t affect me.’ But when almost every aspect of your life changes from your bank account, to your friends, to everyone around you, to everyone kissing your arse, to the phone ringing off the hook… and it happening against the backdrop of being on a tour bus away from whatever you thought home was, without any kind of sense of who you are – which is where I was at the time – and you read press about yourself, which makes you out to be something you never really thought you were… I saw my personality distort. I started thinking I had to live up to that image and if I met people and I wasn’t the most depressed vampire in the world then I would let people down. It became a self fulfilling prophecy.

“I kinda based who I was on what I’d read about myself. Set that against a healthy dose of alcohol and drugs and it’s a recipe for disaster. These days it feels like I learned a lesson. I’d subscribed to the romantic artist belief that my art comes from pain and that I have to be fucked up for inspiration. I believed I did need these things for a while. I’ve learned with a clear mind that I’m capable of a lot more than I was; certainly at the end of my rung. And that’s inspiring to me at the moment.”

Trent has very publicly battled with depression for much of his life. Part of it self-inflicted, an almost psychosomatic repercussion from his constant portrayal as the ever-morose, cocaine and bondage version of Depeche Mode. His voice still shows scars of this. As the sole face of NIN he’s left to do everything: the music, the interviews, the videos, the business side of things, everything. He’s tired and monotonous throughout. But really, all these goths go to bed dreaming of cuddly-wuddly bunny wabbits, rainbows and chocolate. He certainly does following his creation of new album Year Zero.

As a result of Reznor’s new found sobriety, he discovered there were more hours in the day – time that needs to be filled where previously he would use it to ply nose candy into his hooter, bathe in champagne and screw groupies to the floorboards. Well… maybe he still does groupies. I would. And with time to fill, and the advancement of the portable recording studio he wrote an album’s worth of material on NIN’s last tour in support of 2005’s With Teeth." [2]

Unfortunately, after some searching I was unable to pull up a great interview I'd read a couple years back regarding his drug use and music.

And on a different note, [3] provides a great history on Nine Inch Nail's discology. -Etni3s 22:41, 16 April 2007(MST)

Disregard the portion about Trent's personal life and respect of privacy. I feel it would be beneficial to the article itself and it is important to provide a NPOV, not a respectful POV. -Etni3s 23:58, 3 May 2007

Reznor and Social Anxiety Disorder

While I wouldn't be surprised that Trent had/has this, I'm wondering what are the sources for this? Did someone extrapolate to this conclusion or is it actually mentioned somewhere by Reznor? I've seen mention of isolation from people, and panic attacks before performances but not specifically social anxiety disorder. 68.37.138.139 08:32, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

The "hammer time over" article linked above under the Bipolar heading seems to imply that this the case, but it's not a solid source because the specific diagnosis isn't mentioned. BotleySmith 23:00, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, he has social anxiety disorder, that's right. One reason why he's always touring and singing in front of thousands of people. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Evendeeper (talkcontribs) 10:53, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps that's why he was self-medicating with alcohol for years? Perhaps that's why he threw up immediately before going out for his first sober show in 2005? Perhaps you should sign your comments with four tilde marks on talk pages? BotleySmith 19:56, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Religion

Is there any definitive information on Trent Reznor's religous beliefs? Where his music is largely critical of organized religion, has he ever explicitly stated that he is an atheist, agnostic, or a practicing theist of some sort? according to http://nothing.nin.net/int3.html and http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/3239/faq.htm , it would seem that he is something of a deist; would either of these webpages qualify as reliable sources? 24.24.92.46 03:16, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

"There are just some things that don't seem very fair in the world, like this fucking hypocrisy of organized religion. I just don't understand how people can blindly believe a bunch of the shit they're fed, to believe it so that they don't think too hard about other issues. 'Be a good boy and you'll go to heaven.' If it works for you, fine, but it doesn't work for me and that pisses me off, because I kind of wish it did." Trent Reznor WikiQuote I highly doubt he is theistic at all, but rather lacks belief. Tori Amos

Free advertising I guess (Amy Lamedes (talk) 10:50, 8 December 2007 (UTC))

Trent sang backup vocals on Tori's song "Past the Mission", recorded in 1993, released 1994, that whole year there was speculation they were a couple. Her reference to Pretty Hate Machine in "Caught a Lite Sneeze", she has said, was an improve, and she meant it as a reference to when she was driving around listening to really heavy rock music as a single woman in L.A. in the 80s. At that time 1995, she was in dire straits, having just ended a long relationship with Eric Rosse. But Trent and her have been mutual respectors from the beginning. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.95.55.221 (talk) 06:35, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

GA nominaton on hold

A few minor notes before this can be passed as a GA. Leave a note on my talk page when you're done with the stuff listed below. Dihydrogen Monoxide 06:39, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

  • In the infobox, the link should read "Tapeworm", not "Tapeworm (band)"
 Done
  • The lead is rather short considering the article's length. I think you should make some mention of TR's early musical work in the lead (before the NIN mention), and of some of his non-NIN (video games, movies, production, etc.) work.
  • "Reznor was called by his middle name to avoid confusion with his father." - This sort of implies that they named him with his middle name, which doens't make sense. How about "Reznor was referred to by his middle name to avoid confusion with this father."
 Done
  • Ref 4 needs an accessdate, so does ref 5.
Done 4 shouldn't have had a link in the first place (copyvio), so I removed it. 5 is fixed.
  • Option 30 could be wlinked in the image caption in the "Early musical projects" section.
 Done
  • "Reznor joined local band called Option 30," - get rid of the "called"
 Done
  • "In 1985, he joined a band named The Innocent as a keyboardist." - Trim to "In 1985, he joined The Innocent as a keyboardist."
 Done
  • When did he get the Right Track Studio job?
Unfortunately the source does not specify.
  • "This role remains Reznor's on most of the band's studio recordings, though he has occasionally involved other musicians and assistants." - Which band's? Which role? I get the feeling this sentence might belong elsewhere.
Done Good catch. A faulty reference hid some text, so the sentence came out of nowhere. The reference is now fixed and the paragraph follows logically now.
  • "Also included on the tour were The Rollins Band, Ice-T's Body Count and Jane's Addiction for whom the entire concept was to be a sort of farewell." - Wlinks, ref?
Done That was an awful paragraph all around. I redid the whole thing.
  • "and remains the highest-selling NIN release in the United States." - NIN --> Nine Inch Nails
 Done
  • "that he did not like to play large venues. [14] Around this time" - Shouldn't be a space between the full stop (.) and the ref.
 Done
  • Ref 16 and ref 23 are the same, except 23 contains a link (and 16 doesn't). Merge?
Done Merged with 16. The link isn't included in the merge since it's a copyright vio.
  • "Five years elapsed before NIN's next major album" - NIN --> Nine Inch Nails
 Done
  • Ref 21's title implies some sort of anti-government sentiment, but this isn't noted anywhere in the article. Sounds notable...
Done Expanded a bit on the concept, though it is only notable in terms of the album, so I tried to keep it brief.
  • "Interscope was reportedly putting the price of Year Zero as high as thirty dollars (US) in Australia." - Link to USD somewhere here - perhaps "...as high as $30 in Australia."
Done Redid the whole section, and completely removed the sentence in question since the Australia pricing was just one of many factors spanning across Reznor's entire career.
  • "Y34RZ3r0r3mix3d" - Capitalisation is different in the navbox at the bottom.
Done Taken care of in the above edit.
  • wlink for "grandmother"?
I'm not sure what you are referring to here.
  • Why did he call Fred Durst a moron? Is it something to do with the lyrics on "Hot Dog"? If so, this should be made a bit more obvious.
The source does not specify, buy my impression is that it was just a general Durst-bashing comment. Feuds need to start somehow I suppose.
  • "Reznor's association with id software began with Reznor being a fan of the original Doom" - Softward needs a capital "S", Doom should be italicised
 Done
  • Refs 30 and 31 contain selflinks, which aren't necessary.
 Done
  • I think the publisher for ref 34 is news.com, not CNET.
 Done

It would be good if a specific Trent Reznor template were created, rather than listing the other bands he had been in on {{Nine Inch Nails}}. This template could cover all his non-NIN work (video games, production, movies, other bands, etc.)

Such a template shouldn't exist as it's a loose association that would only be transcluded here. –Pomte 02:06, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

That source doesn't really talk very much about anger towards women. He says he loves women, and the author claims that some people accuse him of misogyny, but doesn't really say anything conclusive. Ketsuekigata (talk) 23:53, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
We should not insert intepretations of his songs on here, as it would constitute original research. If Reznor himself offers an interpreation, fine. Otherwise, leave it alone. Asarelah (talk) 18:57, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Past cities where he lived

I live in Akron, Ohio, and I know there was a time, particularly around 1990-1991 where he lived here in Akron, not Cleveland. I know it was supposed to be in a house on Thornton St., but I don't think that was ever verified. I see a reference to him moving to Cleveland, but it never mentions his time in Akron. I think it's important, because it was during the time when his first album was released, and also when he was involved in doing some comic-book artwork. He may have worked in Cleveland, but he lived in Akron for part of that time. 76.253.143.135 (talk) 04:14, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

I just checked back, and found there was never any reference to his artwork at all. I don't know how much there was of it, or who he did work for, but I was told by friends who had seen some of it that it was very good. The best description I can think of is that it was art in the same style of his music from the first album. 76.253.143.135 (talk) 04:18, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Discog

I've been wondering should we include the radio shows that Reznor did w/ Peter Murphy in the Trent Reznor Discog. page? Naufana² : (talk) 22:20, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

They were never released as anything, so I would say no. They one-time performances. Drewcifer (talk) 05:37, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

They were "released/leaked(?)" via Pirate Bay by the seed0 user who first uploaded the Closure DVD. This Closure DVD "release/leak" made its way into the Closure article (as did as the seed0 user). I don't know I really see your point. I think it's relevant/important enough for inclusion especially since Trent has been playing up the whole alternate distribution strategy angle but it does exist in an ambiguous gray zone. Perhaps an addendum to the discog. article; something like "Digital releases" (or "Guerrilla releases" - kidding) Does anyone else have a thought; either pro or con? MusicUnited.org

This is on the MusicUnited site (http://www.musicunited.org/3_artists.html):

Trent Reznor, member of Nine Inch Nails: "Just because technology exists where you can duplicate something, that doesn’t give you the right to do it. There’s nothing wrong with giving some tracks away or bits of stuff that’s fine. But it’s not everybody’s right. Once I record something, it’s not public domain to give it away freely. And that’s not trying to be the outdated musician who is trying to ‘stop technology. I love technology."

PETA info & cat

Agreed that Trent doesn't belong in the PETA category (if there's ever one made for people who've made videos for PETA, that's different), but I do see that the information about his video has been removed (as "minor importance", evidently). Since it was sourced by a copyvio video, I've salvaged the text from prior to its removal in November 2009 and added two sources for it that aren't copyvios:

Reznor has also worked to further animal welfare. He narrated a video for PETA, describing the cat and dog fur trade in China and urging viewers to avoid fur clothing.[1][2]

I'm not sure if I agree in total that it's "minor importance", since it's basically Trent using his clout as a celebrity to try to influence others. But I'm also not strongly devoted to it enough to figure out where to put it in. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:07, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

New Template Alert! (to all registered users)

FYI to all registered users: Since the Trent Reznor article is semi-protected now, could one of you add the "AcademyAwardBestOriginalScore 2001-2020" template to his article? I just made changes to the template that reflect his and Atticus Ross's win at the 2010 Academy Awards but can't add it to Reznor's article because I'm not a registered user, nor do I want to register. (There was just too much drama with a prior account.) Thanks in advance! 68.91.253.123 (talk) 03:40, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

References and getting on track

I considered placing banners or comments in the text but this is less messy. There are obvious issues needing attention. Example: mentioning in the lead that Reznor "plans to do (whatever..) this year with (whoever..)" isn't proper given that it is speculative without whatever event actually taking place. And, most editors are not dedicated enough to check their watchlist two years later to see if what Reznor planned did happen and reference it. Also, there's a bunch of references needed for the majority of claims made in the biography. Finally, I replaced the "posed" photo with a real concert photo that is more up to date; both are encouraged more. Photo questions you may leave on my talk page, OK?  :) --Leahtwosaints (talk) 02:25, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

The picture.

Shouldn't he be pictured in more of a neutral position? Sure it represents the heavier side of his music, but I don't think the majority of his songs can be classified as heavy metal - especially his latest four albums, so you could say it's kind of misleading. And regardless of how heavy his music is, it's still not a very neutral reprensentation of the artist. Robo37 (talk) 09:29, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Recent edits by User:Koychui

@Koychui:, regarding your recent edit with the summary, "Elaborated and explained why such a constructive post is needed... some people thought it was an insult for the neutral but terse version I posted earlier..."

For what it's worth I am not "some people", I am only one, and despite your attempt at mind-reading I did not think it was an insult. As I explained in my original edit summary, your prose did not reflect the source material. While I appreciate your attempt to remedy this I still feel that you are over-egging the pudding somewhat. In the same way that I do not constitute "some people", a single article written in 2010 that used the phrase "one-trick pony" in a complimentary way does not mean that "Some critics have been calling Reznor a one-trick-pony for at least a decade around 2000."

Moreover, the rest of the paragraph, "..which was a pretty darn good trick that made his music worked so well with the subject matter Reznor dealt with in his NIN projects", is poorly written and presents your personal interpretation of a source in Wikipedia's voice. Basically, you've made it sound like Trent Reznor has been criticized for many years, but Wikipedia thinks he's "pretty darn good". And if you were to reword it more properly you'd end up stating the simple fact that one reviewer once said something, which is hardly the kind of content worthy of the lead section, so I can only recommend that someone please remove it as I don't wish to get into an edit war if I'm alone in my opinions. Thanks. nagualdesign 00:21, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

To add on to my reversion summary: criticism does not belong in the header unless it's a near-universal consensus by critics and the general public. Reznor's output since 2000 (both with NIN and solo) has been received positively and does not point to him as being a "one trick pony" whatsoever. Rhe dm i (talk) 12:33, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

Moog Synthesizers

According to Reznor, in a 2015 YouTube interview for Moog: "The first synth I ever got - that was the greatest day of my life, at the time - was the Moog Prodigy. [...] That was really the huge turning-point, you know. I knew that thing inside and out and it was - it just felt musical."

I couldn't think of how to add it, but it seems to belong to his "early life" section. The reason I couldn't figure out where to put it is that I don't know exactly where it falls, chronologically. If he's being sincere and not just saying that to get a free Moog, then it seems important material to me.

External links/ artist agency

Re: addition of Trent Reznor official agency site (William Morris Endeavor)

  • I think that the artist's official agency link as a static and official reference point is worthy of inclusion, as it provides value to the reader in the form of biography, works, and links to the artist's personal avenues of expression (website, social media, videos, etc.). Referencing the recent removal of the artist's agency link by HandThatFeeds, I'd like to get more a more detailed explanation here on the talk page.
  • The justification provided for removing the link was "advertising" but the addition of this official source does not match any of the criteria listed on WP:IBA ("Wikipedia:Identifying blatant advertising"). The agency link does not advertise, explain, or promote the services or fees of the talent agency in general, nor does it solicit any participation from the reader. (ref: WP:LINKSTOAVOID) It does, however, provide reliable and vetted information and resources in the form of official links that avoid confusion with any fan-created or false-identity sources. It's also an economical and unobtrusive method of providing the reader with more information if they want to it, without crowding the page or adding an extensive number of new links.
  • I'm not affiliated in any way with the artist or agency, and not trying to pick a fight with a good-faith reversal of my edit, but I think this type of link does more service and no harm for the reader. -- GimmeChoco44 (talk) 21:21, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Simply put, linking to the agent's site adds no biographical information to the article. Plus, it's a primary source, something Wikipedia frowns upon. I am not accusing you of advertising for the agency, I apologize if that's how it came across. However, in my opinion, the link is effectively advertising for his agency, not providing any actual "value" to the reader. At best, if you found a link discussing his agent & the work that agent did for Reznor, that would be of interest here. But just a straight-up link to the agency is not. — The Hand That Feeds You:Bite 21:43, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your response, HandThatFeeds. However, given that the agency page provides access to current biographical updates/activities via social media links, wouldn't that constitute an added value to the reader and present info not currently included on Wikipedia?

  • Re: primary sources (ref. WP:PRIMARYCARE) -- "The person's autobiography, own website, or a page about the person on an employer's or publisher's website, is an acceptable (although possibly incomplete) primary source for information about what the person says about himself or herself. Such primary sources can normally be used for non-controversial facts about the person and for clearly attributed controversial statements."
  • Also, ref. WP:PRIMARYNOTBAD: "'Primary' is not, and should not be, a bit of jargon used by Wikipedians to mean 'bad' or 'unreliable' or 'unusable'. While some primary sources are not fully independent, they can be authoritative, high-quality, accurate, fact-checked, expert-approved, subject to editorial control, and published by a reputable publisher." -- WME's page is in fact as lean as you can get, fits the reputability criteria, and is likely more reliable than the "All Music" or "IMDB" pages which are user-edited but yet included in the external links section.
  • Is there any Wikipedia-based principle that any of this page's editors feel clearly prohibits this addition? -- GimmeChoco44 (talk) 00:46, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
We're not here to "add value" to the article. If anything is of encyclopedic relevance to the reader should be included in the article, not simply "Hey, here's a link to his agent's site." Current activities are not encyclopedic content.
Primary sources can be used as a reference for material in the article, not simply linked for the heck of it. If you're not finding anything on the site that needs to be included in the article, the link is not relevant.
The strict Wikipedia based principle for not including this (beyond the above) is covered by WP:ELMIN. Relevant quote:

Wikipedia does not provide a comprehensive web directory to every official website. Wikipedia does not attempt to document or provide links to every part of the subject's web presence or provide readers with a handy list of all social networking sites.

Since NIN.com is already linked as his official site, we should not be adding more sites just to give people his agent's version of the same information & social media links. — The Hand That Feeds You:Bite 14:02, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
That's a valid argument. I'm satisfied with that. Thank you for the reference.
However, assigning a good faith edit as "for the heck of it" is presumptive. -- GimmeChoco44 (talk) 19:28, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
That was worded poorly, and I apologize. I shouldn't have been so flippant with that comment. — The Hand That Feeds You:Bite 16:41, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

from Louisiana?

Perhaps I'm missing something, but why do two of the categories at the bottom of the entry refer to Reznor as someone "from Louisiana"? I note that the body of the entry itself makes no mention of Louisiana -- again, unless I'm missing something.

I now see that Reznor moved to New Orleans as an adult for about 9 years as an adult. I'm unsure that makes him "from Louisiana" but leave it to others to determine.
