Ceding parts of Eritrea to Italy
[edit]This passage is contested by many. This is based on the fact that the Ethiopian kingdoms did not exercise administrative control over Hamasien, Akkele Guzay and Seraye...rather they only extracted tribute. "The treaty ceded territories previously part of Ethiopia, namely the provinces of Bogos, Hamasien, Akele Guzay, Serae, and parts of Tigray and is the origin of the Italian colony and modern state of Eritrea." - Firstly, who is many? Secondly, what do you define as "administrative control?" Not all provinces were under the direct administration of the Emperor. Most were in fact ruled by local dynasties who paid tribute to the Emperor and ruled in his name, as was the case in Gojjam and the areas you noted above. Anyway, at the time that they were ceded to Italy, they were under direct administration in this way, as Ras Alula had replaced the old Hamasien dynasty and had been ruling the region for quite some time, then (I think 15 years by 1889). — ዮም | (Yom) | Talk • contribs • Ethiopia 00:37, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
15 years of Administration is that equivalent to Ownership? If so, can it be concluded that Ethiopia was colonized since it was Administered by Italy for Five years? Ownership and Occupation? Which one is it? Ethiopians claim ownership due to Occupation of everyone else's Territory but then deny Ownership of their Territories due to Occupation/Colonization? Double Standard of the silly kind!... 2001:558:600A:4B:797E:C49F:4F3A:DC93 (talk) 05:05, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
Amongst others, David Pool, Kennedy Trevaskis, etc. But this is their point exactly. Is tribute alone a proof of sovereignty or is there something more. Merhawi 03:44, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Weasel Words in this Treaty of Wuchale include referring to Hamasien, Akele Guzay, Serae (Seraye) as "Ethiopian land" or other weasel words are "belonged to Ethiopia" or formerly a part of Ethiopia" or the people are "Abyssinians" blah blah blah....I've noticed in most Ethiopian articles that relate to Eritrea or Eritreans, these weasel words are used to somehow give the biased view that Eritreans/Eritrea = Part of Ethiopia. For example, Ethiopian POVist will use the "tribute payment" argument as evidence of "ownership", where this "tribute payment" somehow validates ownership of Eritrean people's lands. If that is the argument to be used, then can the Italians who owned and occupied Ethiopia in the 1930s claim ownership of Ethiopia and proclaim that Ethiopians are in fact--2A01:4B00:8654:6D00:AD4A:F720:7977:736F (talk) 09:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)--2A01:4B00:8654:6D00:AD4A:F720:7977:736F (talk) 09:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)--2A01:4B00:8654:6D00:AD4A:F720:7977:736F (talk) 09:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)--2A01:4B00:8654:6D00:AD4A:F720:7977:736F (talk) 09:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)--2A01:4B00:8654:6D00:AD4A:F720:7977:736F (talk) 09:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)--2A01:4B00:8654:6D00:AD4A:F720:7977:736F (talk) 09:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)--2A01:4B00:8654:6D00:AD4A:F720:7977:736F (talk) 09:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)--2A01:4B00:8654:6D00:AD4A:F720:7977:736F (talk) 09:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)--2A01:4B00:8654:6D00:AD4A:F720:7977:736F (talk) 09:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)'Italic text'Italic text--2A01:4B00:8654:6D00:AD4A:F720:7977:736F (talk) 09:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)Bold text≥≥≥≥Cite error: A <ref>
