Production line
[edit]Very confusing. Regushee states that the Corona took over the line, Stepho's (?) cite from Toyota: the first 50 years claims that the Crown took its place, and the Japanese WP entry states that the Masterline took its place. What the H??? Also, the Crown has completely different bodywork, rear suicide doors, and different suspension in a modified chassis - more than an aka, I would consider it related but no closer than that. - Page 135 of Toyota: the first 50 years says "Aided by the 1955 upturn in the economy, monthly production of the Crown increased from 500 units in March 1956 to 1,000 units in October; additional demand was met by transferring the production capacity of the Master, production of which was halted in November, to the Crown." Remember that this is the official history with input from both Eiji Toyoda (who was there) and company historians who had access to the factory records. Stepho talk 09:19, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Masterline
[edit]Looks like I made a mistake. I knew that the Crown later first gen (RS27/36/37) and second gen (RS46/MS46) commercial variants used the Masterline name but I thought the RR commercials used only the Master name. Turns out that the Master commercial variants also used the Masterline line, implying that the Masterline name was transferred to the Crown commercials when the Master was discontinued. I searched using トヨペット マスターライン RR16 (Toyopet Masterline) . Other useful search terms are トヨペット マスター (Toyopet Master) and トヨペット クラウン (Toyopet Crown). Stepho talk 10:03, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
RR vs Master vs Masterline
[edit]If this article is to cover the RR Master (which was a sedan only), then what do we do with the RR series Masterline commercial vehicles (eg RR16 wagon)? I suggest we rename it as either the 'Toyopet RR' or 'Toyota RR' to cover the entire RR sedan and commercial range. 'Toyopet Master' and 'Toyota Master' can be redirects to the new name. - I reckon Toyota Masterline needs to be written, since that nameplate had a long and illustrious history. I had similar issues with the Mitsubishi Colt 800/1000F/1100F/11-F - I wanted to call it "Mitsubishi Colt F" so as to make it clear which car it concerned, but apparently the rules dictate that the article be under the introductory name of the car (unless some particular name stands out). Thus, it is named Mitsubishi Colt 800. In any case, I think that the Masterline content can comfortably fit in an article titled "Toyopet Master", since the name is so clearly a derivation of Master. Production dates
[edit]Do we have a source for production ending in November 1956? In a book of mine, a timeline of Japanese car industry, there is an entry for November 1955 which reads like this (with my Google-based translation beneath):
トヨタ自動車はトヨペット・マスターの生産を中止。クラウンは乗り心地に優れ、タクシーに使用してもトラブルが少ないことから、頑丈が取り柄だけのマスターは販売が伸びなかったために短命に終わった。代わって、マスターをベースにした商用車マスターラインピックアップと同ライトバンを発売。いずれも関東自動車に委託生産された。
Toyota ceased production of the Toyopet Master. The Crown, being less trouble and with excellent ride quality, was more popular as a taxi. The Master's only saving grace, a rugged construction, was not enough to provide sufficient sales and it was short-lived. In its place the Masterline commercial vehicle (pickup, van), based on the Master, was released. Production was commissioned to the Kanto Auto Works.

masterline stout
[edit]Should could the master have a link to the stout in relation to the masterline, as the stout is linked to the master. It is a common misconception that toyota toyopet did not make a crew cab/six seat pickup until the late 80's "US" and yet some of us know otherwise, just suggesting that in the article it could be linked to the stout thus onto the hilux that toyota toyopet had a double dual crew cab as early as the master line, masterline.

Redirection

- The 'Toyopet' label was used on all of Toyota's light vehicles sold in Japan, not just the Master. So they had the Toyopet Master, Toyopet Crown, Toyopet Publica, Toyopet Corolla, Toyopet Corona, etc. In Japan, some of the the dealers are known as the 'Toyopet Store'.
