Structural work

[edit]

Just as a heads up, I'm looking at in the next few days folding the character list into the plot section. This is becoming more of the standard way of handling this information for short manga series with a small main cast, as a way of duplicating plot summary (once for the story, then again for each character). This in addition to, as I can, filling in more of info on the media/adaptations. —Quasirandom (talk) 23:05, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hang on a minute, what are you going to do with the cast information from the movie? --Malkinann (talk) 08:31, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What I've seen done in this situation is a cast section in the movie section under media, along with production staff such as writer, director, producer, cinematographer, et and cet. I note that we also need the cast for the awardwinning audiodrama, which would be best handled in that section anyway. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:19, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps it would be a good idea to rewrite the plot section first, before folding the character section? --Malkinann (talk) 20:49, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's my plan, actually, once I reread the manga. Or more specifically, once I steel myself to reread the manga (later this week, I hope). —Quasirandom (talk) 21:47, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I thought that Minami was suffering from some kind of survivor's guilt or post-traumatic stress syndrome or something *brandishes Weet-Bix diploma of psychology* and that was why she could not return his affections, rather than the stigma of surviving the bomb? --Malkinann (talk) 19:59, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Um, yeah, that part needs work. You can read the story either way, and so either would be an interpretation without a reliable-source behind it. I'll come up with something more neutral on my next pass. (Then reread the reviews to date.) —Quasirandom (talk) 15:30, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I mean, if you wanted to talk stigma in the story, I'd sooner talk about Nagio and Toko's family. Of course, there it's considered to be unfair. --Malkinann (talk) 19:35, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, rereading the manga, the stigma part is covered in "Country," while Minami's issue really is survivor guilt. I've tried to make this more clear in my rewrite of "Town". I initially wrote that based on incomplete memories. And I can see why it took Kono almost a year to write "Country." —Quasirandom (talk) 19:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Who is upset by the Peace Memorial? As they're both girls, the use of the pronoun rather than the name is confusing. --Malkinann (talk) 00:40, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Er, it's Toko -- who went to the Peace Park, where the Museum is. The summary as a whole is not my best writing ever, and needs a thorough editing. Does my rewrite make it clearer? —Quasirandom (talk) 01:25, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In general, yes. :) Another niggle is that it's not clear in the summary that Kyoka (Nanami's mother) is dead by the time of Country part I. --Malkinann (talk) 01:43, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Another point is the flashback where Minami found the charred body of her sister. On page 24 she found plenty of charred bodies but on page 26 she says that "...Midori never did come back..." indicating that her body was never found. And there is reference to Nanami's flashback of when her grandmother died, described as Asahi's adoptive mother, but on page 63 Grandma says that Midori hasn't come home yet, indicating that it's his mother from Hiroshima who is having flashbacks of her own to the time of the bombing. 68.7.90.60 (talk) 14:38, 17 December 2011 (UTC)Claude L. As requested : Manga News review French publisher website

There is quite some buzz for an one-shot in France but i focused on the most RS websites. --KrebMarkt 07:49, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, M. Markt. This has been getting buzz everywhere it appears. And it deserves it. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:28, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Let's see, I get the gist of the meat of that first one as:
The drawings, at first simplistic, appear particularly beautiful and characteristic of the author's particular style. They serve and emphasize the depth of a story that seeks to show us the daily life of a survivor, without ever going over-the-top or into excess morality, which would be particularly indigestible.
How far off am I? and what's "surenchère"? —Quasirandom (talk) 14:28, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
sur enchère => out bidding/over bidding the closest English term is over doing. The Too Much vibe/sensation/feeling. I will give a look to that review later --KrebMarkt 15:05, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like the closest English idiom is "going over-the-top". —Quasirandom (talk) 15:16, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agree KrebMarkt 15:51, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've revised the translation. —Quasirandom (talk) 17:01, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Approved the translation after reviewing the French review ;) Woot good job --KrebMarkt 19:18, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Added to the reception section. If you come across any more, let us know. —Quasirandom (talk) 19:50, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

From the French Dicomanga [1]: (summarized version) The mangaka/artist managed to work on the indicible trauma with great delicacy and humanity. The second and shortest story is the real jewel with just thirty sheets/pages, Kouno tell with a crazy talent the survivors suffering melancholy, theirs feeling of guilt facing the incomprehensible fact to be still standing in this world while so many others were teared off by the great white storm bolt. Just, Touching, vibrant: Impeccable. (Nicolas Finet, page 421)
Cheers & Enjoy --KrebMarkt 18:54, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! "indicible" would be "unspeakable", yes? —Quasirandom (talk) 19:38, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

While trying to find the Korean publisher, I came across this review, which looks like it has the potential of being a reliable professional review site, based on machine translations. Something to find a Korean-speaker to evaluate, and potentially use. —Quasirandom (talk) 20:20, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Speaking of said Korean publisher, I've readily confirmed its existence, that its ISBN is 9788970753492, and that its publisher is 문학세계사. This` seems to be the website of said publisher, but I cannot by any method of google-fu get it to admit it has the book in its catalog. So an appeal -- can anyone find the Korean publisher? In a romanized name? With a webpage we can cite? —Quasirandom (talk) 20:48, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps the Korean edition is out of print? --Malkinann (talk) 21:46, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. Possible I suppose, but there are several bookstore sites out there offering it for sale, and machine translation turns up no sign they think it's OOP or hard to get. —Quasirandom (talk) 22:39, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the Korea wikiproject confirmed that's publisher's website but was unable to find a catalog link, so I've referenced that edition with the Google Books record. —Quasirandom (talk) 21:42, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Others ones

[edit]

The previously mentioned in Quasirandom talk page thought provoking review: Ng Suat Tong in hooded utilitarian.

Note: Ng Suat Tong is RS per in The Comics Journal reviewers list.
Note2: My preferred quote is in a comment from Bill Randall: "My main problem with TOECCOCB is that it feels so… educational. Kouno was born a generation after the war. I mean, Barefoot Gen’s educational too, but her generation watched slideshows. His piled up bodies." --KrebMarkt 12:23, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In addition to the review itself, both in it and in the comments have links to other reviwes, some of which are reliable source and not all of them, I think, have been used. Worth digesting, if someone has the time. —Quasirandom (talk) 21:04, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese translations needed

[edit]

So, we've got some good resources in the External links section, if only we had a Japanese speaker working on the article. Of particular interest:

  • Can anyone pick out of the movie's official website the principal production crew, as part of building up the movie media information?

I suspect, though I haven't gotten around to poking at the chain of links, that if we followed the film award announcements, we got get some useful reception from the award givers about the movie and Asou's performance. —Quasirandom (talk) 19:59, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Next steps

[edit]

Is it worth getting someone new in to give the article a copyedit now, or should we focus on trying to get someone with mad Japanese skillz to digest the above resources first? —Quasirandom (talk) 21:47, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think the latter first, as well as checking out the Manga: The Complete Guide entry. --Malkinann (talk) 12:41, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've requested an owner of MtCG to digest its entry. Now to find Japanese speakers to help -- requests for assistance at WP:MANGA and Wikipedia:WikiProject Films/Japanese cinema task force (the two wikiprojects bannered here) has so far gotten nothing. Any ideas of who else to approach? —Quasirandom (talk) 18:01, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It might be worthwhile approaching an individual, as a personal favour? --Malkinann (talk) 22:13, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm open to suggestions. —Quasirandom (talk) 23:32, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Movie information

[edit]

A place to park info about the movie, for possible use in the article:

Searches also pick up a handful of theater listings, plus the DVD is available from the usual Asian cinema importers. Some of the product listings in the latter include more staff credits than we currently list, FWIW. —Quasirandom (talk) 22:42, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
