In the 'Legal Issues' section, create a new paragraph and put: In April 2017, Tory Lanez was arrested on drug and gun charges. He was booked by Miramar police in Broward County, and was hit with a laundry list of charges. Lanez was charged with driving without a valid driver's license, failure to show proof of liability insurance, failure to register a motor vehicle, possession of cannabis 20 grams or less, and carrying a concealed firearm. Lanez was released after posting a $1,000 bond.[1] After the story was released, Lanez took to Instagram to suggest that the reports might have been off base. "Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see. Don't fall behind the hype of the net," he wrote.[2] Issa240 (talk) 15:41, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

You'll need a better source than that per our policy on biographies of living persons. The first article is sourced from Thejasminebrand.com, which according to its Disclaimer page seems to be the work of just one person. The second is sourced from the first article and an Instagram post which doesn't mention it. Do you have any better sources?--Launchballer 16:32, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

July 13th, 2020 gun charges

I reverted one edit about this. I see news about it now, it seems verifiable. Both edits, however, were made between text that already existed and its reference, which has nothing to do with this new info. Hang on a sec while I get a ref, and I'll replace the reverted edit. Non-Neutral tone and Sensationalism in the article regarding his criminal conviction

This is the first time I've ever seen a celebrity's wikipedia page plastered with a specific criminal conviction all over the article? His conviction is mentioned as the initial characterization labels, in the infobox, in the third paragraph and has an entire sub section dedicated to the specific incident, honestly it kind of reeks of sensationalism. MontclairReality (talk) 00:44, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

I agree. Personally I'm not a fan of the artist but I came across the article and was baffled by the fact that convicted felon was listed in the lead along with his occupations. In addition to there being a module of criminal conviction in the infobox. As well as a dedicated paragraph for the conviction in the lead along with a seperate subheading related to the shooting incident and trial. This is all redundant information and should be summarized under the shooting incident and trial subheading. Moreover the information concerning his conviction that is included in the lead has statements from a LA district attorney that aren't even included in the seperate subheading related to the incident. Finally there is a statement in the lead that says the artist last album "featured controversial responses to the revelations of him shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion earlier that year". This statement is not sourced whatsoever. The article reads as a smear piece, which primarily highlights a trial and conviction. As opposed to highlighting the artists life, career and legal troubles, which includes his conviction. In light of this I've made the following changes:
- Removed convicted felon mention from the first line in lead
- Removed criminal information from infobox
- Removed DA statement from the information about his conviction in the last paragraph of the lead. Left the mention of the conviction in the last pararagph and the length of sentencing the artist faces.
- Removed the line "featured controversial responses to the revelations of him shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion earlier that year" from lead as there is no source provided to back this claim
- Added the length of sentencing the artist faces under the shooting incident subheading as the last line. Instantwatym (talk) 01:34, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
His shooting case with Megan Thee Stallion has to be mentioned more frequently on the article. He got sentenced to 10 fucking years in prison for that, you can't characterize that as a redundant information and should be summarized under the shooting incident and trial subheading. Open a fan blog if you want to push this overtly positive narrative, Wikipedia is supposed to be neutral Lean Harvey Oswald (talk) 12:21, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
The last two lines of the lead state the following "On December 23, 2022, Lanez was convicted in the Los Angeles County Superior Court of three felony charges related to shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. On August 8, 2023, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison." So his charges and related convinction and sentence are literally mentioned in the lead. This is the expanded on further in the appropriate section on the shooting and its criminal trial. The changes made to the article in June are listed in bullet points above but I can go into a bit of detail as to why this was non-neutral in my opinion:
  • Removed convicted felon mention from the first line in lead - Removed because the first line where the individual is characterized per their occupations and career is not the appropriate place to mention "convicted felon" along with occupations. I removed but someone addied it back and it's still present in the article. So there is no point of contention here since it was reverted.
  • Removed criminal information from infobox - This individual is an artist and rose to prominence as such. He's not a career criminal where the infobox should be about criminal information. I removed the module but someone added it back and it's still present in the article. So there is no point of contention here since it was reverted.
  • Removed DA statement from the information about his conviction in the last paragraph of the lead. Left the mention of the conviction in the last pararagph and the length of sentencing the artist faces. - I removed the DA statement because these were statements from one side in the criminal trial. The only way to present that in a non-neutral manner was to present a defense statement as well. But highlighting DA and Defense statements is not suited for a lead. It's suited for the subheading on the shooting and trial and should be placed there. I left the lenght of sentencing the artist faces in the last line of the lead. This was prior to him being sentenced. After he was sentenced the article was updated correctly to state the actual length of the sentence. So there is no point of contention here either with the wording about sentencing in the lead. The only point of contention would be that you want a DA statement re-inserted into the lead, which in my opinion would not be a netural POV.
  • Removed the line "featured controversial responses to the revelations of him shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion earlier that year" from lead as there is no source provided to back this claim. Removed because this wasn't sourced whatsoever. Also any source would need to explicitly state those revelations to support the language above. And lastly this information even if added with a good source is better placed under the shooting subheading and not the lead. So your point of contention here is that an unsourced claim supposedly related to the shooting was removed from the lead?
  • Added the length of sentencing the artist faces under the shooting incident subheading as the last line. - Prior to my edit the length of sentencing the artist faced was not mentioned under the shooting subheading. I added it. So your point of contention there is that I ADDED relevant details about the trial and sentencing to the appropriate section? This last line was later updated correctly to state the actual sentence after the artist was sentenced.
So overall, I don't known why you responded the way you did above and why you didn't state what exactly you were taking issue with in my June/2023 edit. Nevertheless I have explained my edit here in more detail and provided my justifications for some of the changes and what points of contention you might have. Thanks. P.S. Wikipedia is supposed to be neutral. Presenting a neutral POV is not an overtly positive perspective. Adding unsourced content to lead sections in relation to a given legal issue and trial, adding convicted felon mention to the first line in lead along with occupations, adding a criminal history infobox prior to a sentence, adding DA statements which present one side of trial being covered into the lead section is non-neutral. Check your own bias and/or look through whatever edit you are questioning in detail prior to falsely accusing others of having a bias. Instantwatym (talk) 15:02, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
I invite you to check the genres here DollysOnMyMind (talk) 21:37, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
Why would I check genres here? This discussion is about a June 2023 edit about presenting this artist in more neutral tone. Unless you're implying that you only replied to this discussion because you were engaging in WP:HOUNDING after a disagreement about genres on the talk page of a different artist. I'm not even too familiar with this artists catalog to engage in any informed discussion about his genres aside from his primary genre. Give your reply here on this discussion about being overtly positive and non-neutral. Don't deflect to other things. Instantwatym (talk) 22:22, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
yea dude. That's what the genres on the infobox are supposed to be. As you said it: his primary genres. Why on Chris Brown you are acting like this is different? Sounds tricky to me DollysOnMyMind (talk) 07:44, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
I agree that "and convicted felon" doesn't belong in the lead sentence. For some reason people just love to add this to pop culture figures. If it's not one of the things they're primarily known for, it doesn't belong in the lead sentence. Valereee (talk) 10:49, 13 October 2023 (UTC)

A “convicted felon” is this a convicted person who’s been convicted of a felony.
