[edit]According the genealogical tradition of the 15th century pedigree of Ruaidhri mac Turcaill, Clan MacLeod is a continuation of Clan Nicolson. Hence, presumably the marriage to a Nicolson heiress, was a matter of retaining patrilineal lands within the family (in the face of feudal inheritance law).
