Pitiscus

I am removing this bit: "Classical scholar Samuel Petiscus, engaged by the publisher to correct the sixth edition, advises the "Friendly Reader" that this book, deriving from Giovanni Boccaccio, Giraldi, and Conti, was invaluable in the classical instruction of "studious youths"." Allen did not quite get his facts in order. The problem is that Samuel Pitiscus did not correct the 6th edition of Tooke's Pantheon. The Dutch scholar actually worked on the 6th edition of Pomey's Latin Pantheum mythicum (Utrecht : Willem van de Water, 1701). We find there not “Friendly Reader” but “Lectorem benevolum”, and not “studious youths” but “studiosae juventuti”. Belastro (talk) 03:38, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
