Origin of the word Tonawanda
[edit]This article, Tonawanda Creek, appears to conflict with the article, Tonawanda (city), New York with regard to the origin of the word Tonawanda. I don't know enough about Houdensaunee languages myself to offer a definitive answer. I hope someone with more knowledge than me will make an appropriate and accurate correction. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.241.186.146 (talk) 01:01, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
- Done. William Bright's book Native American Placenames of the United States is about as good a source as exists for the topic. The vast majority of theories and claims about Native American name origins and meanings are wild guesses, at best. Bright says the origin of Tonawanda is unknown, but "probably Iroquoian".
