Juan Trippe fact

Was going to put this in the text, but instead decided per the Wiki "Cite Sources" guidance to cut it and put this here.

Pan American World Airways's president Juan Trippe was a member of his band in 1940. ??? Can any Dorsey or Trippe expert verify this? It seems to be a mixing of a Frank Sinatra date (joining Dorsey) that appears in a sidebar on a Juan Trippe page [1] ... please fix or remove this comment, note this factoid does NOT appear on the Juan Trippe page ... ???

Will email AnonionMartin who I think added it to see if he has a better cite for this factoid.

High C#

It's not that hard for a seasoned player to pull off.

I'm not clear about to which C# the article refers. Keeping in mind that C4 is "middle C," is this "High C#" C#5 (not impressive, but the trombonists in Tommy's day rarely played above G4) or C#6 (which is impressive)? The article should note if it is C#5 or C#6. The article should also note that Tommy made playing above G4 a requirement for a serious trombonist. Previous to Tommy, trombone music was almost never written above G4. Now, one sees frequent C5's, a professional trombonist is expected to play an F5 with good tone quality, and virtuosos exceed Bb5, equivalent to a trumpet's "Triple C." New material

The new book out last year on Dorsey provides some good factual matrerial to update this page. I believe that he had more than one wife, contrary to what is in the text. Talk to Dr. M 20:20, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Spouses

Herb Sanford's biography, The Dorsey Years, states that his first wife was named Mildred but always was called "Toots". In 1943 he married B-movie actress Patricia Dane and divorced her in early 1947. So Jane New Dorsey was correctly identified as his third wife.

Need for citations and references

I bet a few people on here love Tommy Dorsey so much that they know this information on this page by memory. And that's why there's no citations for the information cited. The only problem is, is that the reader has nowhere to go to find out where the information is from, the reader can't find out if any mistakes were made and it detracts from the objecivity of the page. Spinning the Discography off to its own page

what would anyone think of taking the discography and spinning it off to its own page? And also, taking "Selected Recordings" and deleting it? "Selected Recordings" begs the question "Selected by who?" It seems too subjective a category.24.167.105.97 (talk) 04:08, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Now I'm thinking, the Discography section has problems because it seems to be referring to compact discs and records of reissues of the original Tommy Dorsey band. Isn't the "discography" part redundant? I thought it was already "spun off". I'm getting motion sickness from all the spinning. With other artists like Barbra Streisand, each individual album she did has its own article, maybe the Tommy Dorsey discography on here can be separated like that? The section of the article is already half way there. Each album has its own link. It's not really extensive though, because RCA was in the process of doing "The Complete Tommy Dorsey on RCA" in the seventies. I think they stopped around 1937. Because if you use Streisand as an example, those albums she did (that are listed on Wikipedia) were the first issuings of the recordings. The records/cds presented here are reissues. Sorry to sound so anal retentive, but a real discography would be pages and pages of dates and sidemen and singers and matrix numbers of the original recordings Tommy Dorsey did for Decca and RCA from the 20s to the 50s. Why don't you separate the Tommy Dorsey reissues into separate pages like Barbra Streisand's are, with individual entries? You could even go back into the 78rpm era and have individual entries for each 78 Dorsey made. Partial discographies are always going to be subjected to the whims of whoever created them because the information chosen is related to the author's interests or blindspots. (2) Furthermore, let me note that "Reissues" is too generic and it can relate to any kind of reissued media, software, music recordings, video recordings. The reissues in question are under the category Discography. (3) Making a separate article for discography is not mandated and one can find plenty of musicians whose recordings are listed in discographies in the article for the musician. The following is too imprecise: no specific year. no explanation of contradictory "Complete" title and un-referenced assertion that project was not completed. Citations were pending because the book where the citation is, is at the public library which is closed due to their remodelling, which doesn't mean anything to anyone outside of where I live, but which is why I added "citations pending". Serious oversight

Dorsey's group The Clambake Seven made a great many recordings, including many with Edythe Wright. The article contains only one mention of the Clambake Seven, with no hint of what it was, how it was formed, or what time period it was in existence.
