Fair use rationale for Image:Albany Times-Union.jpg
[edit]Image:Albany Times-Union.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 19:11, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

The result of the proposal was No consensus. Although three have agreed to move, there are at least four ideas on where to move it. Since discussion has grown stale and this is one of the oldest requests still open, I am closing. —Wknight94 (talk) 13:42, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Requested move
[edit]Times Union → Albany Times Union — Need to make room for a disambiguation page at Times Union and Times-Union -- there are at least five such newspapers (Albany; Rochester (defunct); Florida; Brooklyn (defunct); and Warsaw, Indiana). —Powers T 11:45, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

- Rename to Times Union (New York). The paper is not based in Albany and apparently that is not even in the papers names. Just follow the normal dab rules. You could also consider Times Union (capital district). Vegaswikian (talk) 06:27, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
- Neither of those disambiguations is specific enough, unfortunately. Putting the city name in front seems to be the standard method of disambiguating newspapers (see Brooklyn Times-Union as an example) and is perfectly appropriate according to our guidelines. As for not being based in Albany, it's true only in the strictest sense; its coverage area is centered in Albany, it's headquartered in a suburb of Albany in Albany County, and its web site says "Serving New York's Capital Region -- Albany, NY" (emphasis mine). (See, for example: [1], [2] (see title bar), [3], and from the very publisher of the newspaper: [4].) "Albany Times Union" is in wide use and is well understood. Powers T 22:23, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
- 'Specific enough'? A dab just need to uniquely differentiate the title. New York or the capital district or any one of the other options does so. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:46, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- "Times Union (New York)" could refer to any of three newspapers. Powers T 02:47, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- Given the article Brooklyn Times-Union, it appears that is the name. However after re reading the article, it appears that the actual name may in fact be Times-Union. In which case that article should also be renamed with a dab. Of course these articles do not establish that the names with a city being prefixed are well used to make them a common name. We disambiguate for a reason and this appears to be a good case. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:52, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- Brooklyn Times-Union doesn't need to "be renamed with a dab" because it already contains disambiguation. You are conflating all disambiguation with parenthetical disambiguation. There's absolutely no reason to use the parentheses when another very common, simpler method of disambiguation is available. Powers T 13:00, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

- Oppose: This appears to be the main topic under "Times Union" (only the defunct Rochester paper bears exactly the same name; I couldn't find an article for the Warsaw paper). Instead of moving this article, a "Times Union (disambiguation)" page should be created, listing the similarly named papers. A hatnote on this article should say something similar to "This article is about the Albany, New York newspaper. For other uses see Times Union (disambiguation)." Station1 (talk) 17:41, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- Here is what the dab page looks like currently. The Albany paper doesn't seem like an obvious primary topic to me (obviously, or I wouldn't have proposed the move), but YMMV. Powers T 19:25, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- I agree, I'm not sure that there is a primary topic, especially if the Brooklyn paper is really called the Times-Union. Vegaswikian (talk) 21:59, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Discussion
[edit]- Any additional comments:
- Comment As the official title of the paper appears to be "Times Union", Times Union (Albany) or similar is probably more appropriate. JPG-GR (talk) 19:04, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Move
[edit]Look, this article has to move somewhere. I can't move it to "Albany Times Union" because that redirect has a history. What else can we do here? Powers T 22:13, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'm going to be bold and move it to "Times Union (Albany)" so that this title can be used for a disambiguation page. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 23:02, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Image Question
[edit]I see there is some question about the fair use rational of the main image, but here's a better question: Why is that image being used? It isn't representative of the paper as a whole, as only in extreme circumstances does the Times Union have that sort of one story with really big lettering New York Post feel, and besides, there's a lot more to New York than 9/11. My feeling is that someone scan in just the header (it is, in my mind at least, somewhat iconic), as the fair use rational is pretty straightforward for that (it's a logo, there's no alternative, and it can be scanned in at a lower resolution). I'd do it, but I don't have a copy of the Times Union on hand right now. SnetskyCM (talk) 05:09, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
