Bendix washing-machines

[edit]

Another brand associated with Thorn EMI that may be missed in this article is Bendix. This company had made some washing machine, especilly front-loading automatics for the UK and Australian markets especially through the 1970s to the early 1990s. The nameplate on some of these machines had the Thorn EMI logo as part of the Bendix logo and documentation often made references to Thorn EMI for customer support. Business Divisions

[edit]

Until around 1985 Thorn-EMI grouped its businesses into 8 major operating divisions. About this time it sold the cinemas, the film making business, and Ferguson. It also divested itself of the many small companies which made up the Metal Industries division. Thereafter I think it had 4 strategic business units, roughly Technology, Retail, Lighting & Music. Details of these will be found in old company reports and newspaper articles of the period (the Financial Times probably provides good coverage). Using the actual structure that the company itself used would help place the wide range of business units in a better context, especially as their significance changed a lot over time.
