A fact from Thomas Yarborough appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 13 August 2022 (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:
Did you know... that in 1948, Thomas Yarborough became the first African American to be elected as a city council member in California?
Yarborough was elected mayor of Lake Elsinore in 1966, according to multiple sources. The timeline on the city's website has him being elected mayor in 1964. This may be where the "first" claim arises, although George Carroll (judge) was elected as mayor of Richmond, California in early 1964, so even a 1964 election for Yarborough wouldn't guarantee it. One of the sources states "When elected to the Lake Elsinore City Council in 1948, Yarborough was the first African American to be voted into that office in California".
