Penguins
[edit]Europeans are not recorded venturing into penguins' natural range in the southern hemisphere until the Portuguese sailed to southern Africa in the 1480s, 40+ years after Derham's death (Cape Cross, 1485, Cape of Good Hope, 1488). The first identifiable record of Europeans meeting the (Magellanic) penguin dates to 1520. Memes aside, it's essentially impossible that he knew of penguins' existence, let alone seen, met, or handled one (appropriately or not). Mockingbus (talk) 12:11, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
