I'm looking at a copy of Bold Women in Alaska History by Marjorie Cochrane right this moment. The chapter on Buchholdt reads pretty much like a carbon copy of this article. The account who contributed most of this article's content has a username matching the name of her daughter. However, that account's last contributions occurred before the book was published, so it's hard to say who's "plaigarizing" who here. Regardless, the superlatives attached to her initial election to the House in 1974 are questionable. Both the article and the book state that she was the first Asian American elected to the Alaska Legislature. This is incorrect. Frank See, who was mayor of Hoonah for nearly 20 years, was elected to the House in 1964 and 1966. He was of mixed Chinese and Tlingit ancestry. Also, the distinction of whether she was the first Asian American woman state legislator, first Filipino American state legislator or first Filipino American woman state legislator has never been definitively clarified to the best of my knowledge, as she's been credited as any one of those three by various sources over the years. A professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage wrote in a 2010 commentary in the Anchorage Daily News that "Thelma Buchholdt of Alaska was the first Filipino-American state legislator and Benjamin Cayetano of Hawaii was the first Filipino-American governor" in response to Filipino-American History Month being recognized on both the federal and state level for the first time. Her profile at the Alaska Women's Hall of Fame website states the same. Her obituary and various other sources narrow it down to her being the first Filipino-American woman, however.
