1956 radio broadcast
[edit]"The Stronger" was presented in the experimental U.S. network series CBS Radio Workshop on June 15, 1956, and sung by Adelaide Bishop. The program included an introduction by Goddard Lieberson, president of CBS Records. This appears to be the first broadcast performance of the opera.
The following is (with some deletions) the program listing from RadioGoldindex.com.
The CBS Radio Workshop. June 15, 1956. CBS net. "The Stronger". A "pre-release performance" of a one-act, one-voice opera that was chosen by The American Chamber Music Committee to be "given a major performance on record as part of the 'Columbia Modern American Composer'" series. Goddard Lieberson (President of Columbia Records) introduces the "chamber opera" based on a play by Strindberg. Alfredo Antonini (conductor), Goddard Lieberson (host), August Strindberg (author), Richard Hart (adaptor), Roger Foster (announcer), Paul Roberts (producer), Hugo Weisgall (composer), Adelaide Bishop. 28:57.
There is an error in the Wikipedia page for The Stronger (Opera)
[edit]The page says the English language libretto for the opera is by Richard Henry Hart based on an August Strindberg play from 1889, but the link to Richard Henry Hart says he died in 1884, so either the dates are incorrect or the wrong Richard Hart is linked. Here is the paragraph in question: The Stronger is an opera in one act by composer Hugo Weisgall. The English-language libretto by Richard Henry Hart is based on August Strindberg's 1889 play of the same name. It premiered at the White Barn Theatre in Westport, Connecticut, on August 9, 1952 and was dedicated to that theatre's founder, the actress Lucille Lortel. 73.145.164.56 (talk) 18:51, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
