Talk:The Rum Diary (novel)

Page contents not supported in other languages.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm going to make this page into a disambiguation page which can link to either (a) The Rum Diary, the Hunter Thompson novel, or (b) The Rum Diary, the California-based indie rock band. I'm planning on doing this, say, tomorrow, so let me know if you have any concerns. Perch was caught on a small fishing pole.

Fair use rationale for Image:The Rum Diary.jpg

[edit]

Image:The Rum Diary.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

When was this book published?

[edit]

The infobox says 1993, but my copy of it says 1998, as does the article. HOWEVER, the article also says he gave up on having it published in 1999... huh??? Hadn't it already been published by then? Or did it mean that he'd given up on it before, and was telling Charlie about that, and how he didn't expect it to finally get released the prior year? I've actually seen that interview, but I don't remember it specifically... anyone?J'onn J'onzz (talk) 17:21, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this article is confusing. Was it published in 1998 or 1993? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 161.184.52.50 (talk) 02:13, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know the novel was first published in 1998. See also the Bibliography of Hunter S. Thompson. A from L.A. (talk) 06:45, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Discovery" of the papers

[edit]

Did Johnny Depp really "discover" the book amongst Thompson's papers, as the article states in the beginning? In the documentary Back Story of The Rum Diary it seems more like Hunter S. Thompson thought about making it into a film while in the process of publishing it. Then he started working on the development and deals straight after the publishing of the book in 1998. That's when his friend Johnny Depp joined in. It’s hardly a "discovery amongst the papers" when the book was already out there in the book stores. But I’m happy to hear more details and be proven wrong. MoryVanderbuilt (talk) 10:35, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
