Differences between the Book and the TV adaptation

- Jim is considerably older than 13
- Major Marchbanks is stabbed by Mrs. Holland
- Mrs Holland's 'tame burglar' is killed by Mr Berry, her 'tame thug'
- Mrs Rees simply disbelieves Sally, rather than blaming her
- Trembler does not appear at all
- Sally's involvement in Frederick's business is barely covered at all
- The whole segment with a replacement pistol is not present
- Sally and Frederick buy some opium before rescuing Matthew Bedwell
- Matthew Bedwell has his throat cut by a tall man of European appearance in the grounds of the Oxford vicarage
- At this time, Sally is seen to be stalked by a mysterious Oriental
- Mrs Holland go to Swaleness to search for the ruby, when she ses the inn sign (The Turk's Head) and realises how to solve the cipher
- Mrs Holland seizes Adelaide herself, with Mr Berry's help
- After killing Mr Berry, Fred retrieves Sally's original pistol
- Mrs Holland vanishes wih Adelaide during the fight with Mr Berry
- Jim reveals that he has the gem, not Rosa
- Mrs Holland let the mutineers into the Maharajah's palace
- Ah Ling doesn't explicitely say that Sally would be his wife - the implication is slavery
- Sally shoots Ah Ling with her father's pistol
- Sally & Rosa return to the cartriage to find the body gone immediately, rather than reading about it the next day
- There is no mention of the photographic business being in financial trouble
- Sally is approached by the mysterious Oriental, who reveals himself as her father's aide, and gives her the message about 'under the clock'
