What does rasmus mean?

[edit]

Is rasmus really the Swedish word for "snake"? I'd always thought it was orm. Could a native Swedish speaker confirm this? JIP | Talk 08:23, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Rasmus means darkness in finnish. In swedish it means fog or something like this. But they are finnish, so...
I hope this is the answer you wanted to read. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.73.181.142 (talk) 09:54, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm both Finnish and a native speaker of Finnish, and I have never heard "Rasmus" meaning "darkness". "Darkness" in Finnish is "pimeys". "Rasmus" doesn't mean anything special in Finnish, it's just a proper name. JIP | Talk 13:12, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Rasmus is the Scandinavian form of Erasmus (which means 'Beloved' in greek). According to my dictionary it has nothing to do with darkness. Uwilldrop 18:54, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

They've said in interviews that it doesn't mean anything. When they were first coming up with a name, one of them suggested "Trashmosh", they played around with it, and ended up with "Rasmus". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.83.113.88 (talk) 18:01, 19 June 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lauri has recently said that The Rasmus does not mean anything at all. It was just a word they used. There is no meaning. Stop trying to analyze things and let them be. Helena Rayne 14:54, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I red sumwhere that rasmus means "music pit" in finnish. i donno finnish so maybe sum1 can verify this... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.92.42.117 (talk) 16:16, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Rasmus said on Top of the Pops once that Rasmus is a mash of words "trash" and "mosh". Say "Trashmosh" very fast and it sort of sounds like it. The interview is somewhere on the UK website. --Leemorrison 16:16, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I thought that it meant car crash. Don't know where I heard that, I just remembered it from somewhere. U-Mos 16:26, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I used to be a Rasmus groupie in 96-98. Rasmus does not mean "music pit", nor is it "the finnish words for trash and mosh", nor "darkness". It's simply a Scandinavian man's name. In 1996 Rasmus gave an interview where they said that they had been in a fast food place, some child was goofing around, and the child's mother yelled to the child, "Rasmus! Stop it, Rasmus!", which inspired the band members to take Rasmus as their name. In another interview, however, they claimed that story false. I guess they like to invent stories about the name... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.234.5.138 (talk) 09:32, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It means Rasmus Klump. ---Majestic- 09:40, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rasmus does not mean snake in Swedish. As stated above, it's just a name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Canin (talkcontribs) 10:34, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Full of Rumours

[edit]

I have no idea who wrote this biography but seriously, it is so full of rumours and half-truths that I hope that no non-fan stumbles across it because they cannot differ what is true and what is not... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.70.74.164 (talk) 10:51, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, what's up with in the first paragraph it says someone will be singing on their new album, but i've never heard anything anout a new album this soon after hide from the sun... what's up with that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.51.18.56 (talk) 07:39, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The 5 Dollar French

[edit]

My friend is obsessed with the Rasmus and she read somewhere that Lauri once french-kissed a guy for 5 dollars. Can anyone clear up as to whether this is true or false? TearAwayTheFunerealDress 16:14, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rasmus is finnish man"s name. I am finnish guy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.157.127.235 (talk) 19:08, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That is not what I was asking. I was talking about a rumor that has been circulated around. TearAwayTheFunerealDress 15:48, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lauri and Eero once kissed after losing a bet. There's a photo of it in the booklet that came with Hell of a Collection. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.30.197.135 (talk) 23:42, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's a rumor, I can't confirm since i'm not Lauri, but as far as we know Lauri, he's not the kind of guy to say to magazines that he french kissed a guy for 5 bucks. I bet it's false. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.131.111.132 (talk) 21:48, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I dunno. When they had just started out, they traveled to London to perform at club Orange, and since they were pretty broke, Lauri for example played a tin whistle in the street to get money... Given their very playful nature at that time, it would be no wonder. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.234.5.138 (talk) 09:40, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's not false. As said there is a picture in the Hell Of A Collection booklet of Lauri and Eero kissing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.124.85.146 (talk) 12:56, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

editing band member bios

[edit]

it's in pretty bad shape and I deleted the silly rumours... the intro is still doing quite poorly. someone ought to fix it. what say? Insane Nidhi 19:56, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree its horrid. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.104.130.156 (talk) 01:22, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, get rid of it please! It's very ugly. I think there should just be a simple list of present and past band members, like other wikipedia articles on bands. --Leemorrison 16:18, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Musical Genre

[edit]

What musical genre does The Rasmus belong to? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.216.222.236 (talk) 04:58, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

->Rock. The Rasmus themselves say they play rock with strong melodies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.70.120.2 (talk) 11:17, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

--> I'm playing Hide From The Sun on WMP right now, and the tracks say Genre: Rock/Pop. --Leemorrison 16:20, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The article says heavy metal but a friend of mine says it has absolutely nothing to do with metal, and that they are actually pop rock etc. I think that "heavy metal" should be removed from the article: in my opinion, heavy metal is something like Metallica, Cannibal Corpse, Blind Guardian or maybe even Nightwish. Ciacchi 17:42, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is true, the band have absolutely nothing to do with Heavy Metal, it is not even debatable. Radagast1983 12:03, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think "rapcore", "funk" and "gothic metal" should be removed from the article. Impu1se 04:56, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Metal? The Rasmus?? NO WAY! Maybe nu metal in their recent albums but they have still nothing to do with metal. Also HIM have nothing to do with metal. It's *** (censored) ← Watch the language! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.114.157.87 (talk) 14:44, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

they are "GOTH ROCK",an wasen"t "FUNK" and "RAPCORE",but now they are GOTH ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.248.39.149 (talk) 01:51, 3 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

They are so far from Goth Rock it's laughable. I think the Genre needs to be changed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.241.79.89 (talk) 10:59, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

They have nothing to do with gothic rock, just ask the people running the gothic rock arcticle.74.47.11.154 (talk) 19:54, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have listened to all their albums and, as a devoted funk rock fan, I especially liked their 1996's Peep and 1997's Playboys (true funk rock, whatever one may say). However, I have not heared a bit of Goth Rock even on their more recent albums. The only thing gothic about them is the fact that they wear all-black outfits most of the time, and maybe Lauri's occasional make-up. This does not make them gothic. Maybe visual rock (japanese term) or glam rock, but hardly gothic.

It's nice that a statement that they play Gothic rock is sourced. Unfortunately, quoted sources (AMG and Playground Music) does not mention Gothic Rock in reference to The Rasmus.

However, I'd agree that current Lauri's image is halfway between gothic and glam rock. How about changing "Gothic rock" to "Gothic rock (disputed)" in the infobox? Netrat_msk (talk) 00:44, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

actually they are gothic and the music is gothic rock. i would know because i AM gothic..i wear black all the time and only have black make-up. (TIZ) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.101.194.218 (talk) 05:11, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just because you wear all black and have black makeup doesn't make you gothic. It's about the state of mind and whether or not you know how it began. I am of the gothic subculture as i know how it started and how it is influenced to this day. Seriously. Learn your terms before calling yourself something you probably aren't. -Matthew Miasma™(myspace.com/kingovblackening) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.199.11.224 (talk) 17:29, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Rasmus have nothing to do with gothic rock, they're basically just moody alternative pop/rock. And plus, the sources for the gothic rock genre don't even call them gothic, like you said above. So yeah... gothic rock doesn't belong here.74.47.11.154 (talk) 18:40, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh and by the way, a band's image and fanbase don't do anything to define their genre.74.47.11.154 (talk) 19:52, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Rasmus music genre is easy, they have a Original style music

Emo? Really? 92.26.224.210 (talk) 15:36, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm a genre expert, and I can see your having a genre battle. Well look on all of the album pages and see what people write the most common genre on their should be added to the article 109.149.143.121 (talk) 16:54, 8 April 2012 (UTC)ericdeaththe2nd109.149.143.121 (talk) 16:54, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Recent editing...

[edit]

At the risk of being gang-bashed, I have removed all of those excess links in the External Links section, as well as the relevant tag... My reason for removing them was that they were country-specific fansites and forums, and not, say, a Finnish forum (which would be relevant as The Rasmus are Finnish). The International Forum link remains there to represent all of the other forums.

I've also copy-edited and rephrased some info, but of course some strange rumours and trivia still remains... The 'Aki' section needs a serious cleanout! Hopefully it's looking a bit better...

Discography

[edit]

There's a cassette tape release from 1995 with a compilation of four Finnish groups each playing 3 or four songs, which should be mentioned as the first official recording from Rasmus, since they're featured on the A' side of that tape. Any more info on that?

Semi-protection

[edit]

{{Editprotected}} I think it is necessary for this page to be under semi-protection, since people are adding musical genres without sources and tons of unoofficial fansites in the "External links" section.

As the editprotected template said, you need to request protection at [[WP:RFPP]. Also, please add new sections to the bottom of talk pages. — Carl (CBM · talk) 01:11, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, as it has been vandalised to include things like "awful band" and how finland considers terrible music good. 24.74.141.22 20:29, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Name

[edit]

I removed the line: " In Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland "Rasmus" is a masculine name.", because this is an opinion, and I'm from Denmark and know no one who consider Rasmus a 'masculine name'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.197.38.2 (talk) 16:02, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mexico

[edit]

Since the band is tremendlously popular in Mexico (and Latin America), should be this put along on artistic and commercial achievement? Sold Out shows, promo-tours and high cd sales would confirm this. Regards. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.169.62.204 (talk) 16:44, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
