Echo of Gerard Manley Hopkins?
[edit]There are sections of this poem that, with their sprung rhythm and assonance, remind me so much of the writing of Gerard Manley Hopkins.
All act was clutch,
All fact, contact, the attack and the interlock
Of tongues, the charms of arms. I shook at the touch
Of his fresh flesh,
Has any published work commented on this resemblance? Two decades after writing this poem, Auden was quoted as saying "you cannot imitate [Hopkins] without just producing pastiche", but here young Auden seems to be doing just that. -- ABehrens (talk) 02:04, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
