Compilation album, Studio album, or Soundtrack album?
[edit]Is The Lion King: The Gift a soundtrack album just like Kendrick Lamar's Black Panther: The Album, is it a compilation album as the infobox once stated, or is it Beyoncé's seventh studio album as the article has it? I'm reverting back to soundtrack album until a consensus is reached. I see it as a soundtrack album as per the similar BP album. Nice4What (talk · contribs) – (Don't forget to share a Thanks ♥) 01:15, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
- I think we can all rule out whether or not it’s a studio album as it carries the film’s name in the title. I also believe it should be listed as a soundtrack album. A more clear answer will be provided once the album charts on the Billboard 200 and how they choose to credit it. StatsFreak (talk) 02:59, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
- You can't state that it is a compilation album without confirmation.
- You can't state that it is a studio album without confirmation.
- You can't state that it is a promotional album without confirmation.
- You can't state that it is a studio album without confirmation.
- Billboard 200 may credit this as whatever is listed on Wikipedia. This is circular reporting. Wikipedians calls it citogenesis.
- It's definitely an album, it's very unclear about what type it is though. So: I suggest we keep it just as "Album", (keeping it neutral) to avoid all of these possible issues until confirmation by reputable sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LondonQuays (talk • contribs) 16:20, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
- I've reverted your edit. A talk page discussion already started above. Do not impose your will until a consensus is reached and don't edit war. Nice4What (talk · contribs) – (Don't forget to share a Thanks ♥) 16:36, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
"The soundtrack is a love letter to Africa and I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa, not just use some of the sounds and did my own interpretation of it,"
Sources for the term "soundtrack" or "soundtrack album":
- Heavy.com – "Beyonce is releasing the soundtrack album The Lion King: The Gift tonight."[1]
- Vulture – "[Beyoncé] has given us The Gift, a tie-in soundtrack..."[2]
- Uproxx – "...in 2019, she gave us this soundtrack."[3]
- Quartz Africa – "This week, Disney is set to release The Lion King soundtrack, produced by Beyonce..."[4]
- The Atlantic – The Blind Spot of Beyoncé’s Lion King Soundtrack[5]
- Entertainment Weekly – "It makes sense that the soundtracks fall to the same trappings."[6]
Beyoncé herself called The Gift a soundtrack, saying in a rare TV interview "The soundtrack is a love letter to Africa and I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa, not just use some of the sounds and did my own interpretation of it."[7] Nice4What (talk · contribs) – (Don't forget to share a Thanks ♥) 17:01, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you for your constructive research on what type of album this is Nice4What. The dispute could've been resolved if you did this in the beginning. Please allow up to 24 hours for other editors to make other contributions. But I think you have a solid enough case to label it as a soundtrack album. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LondonQuays (talk • contribs) 17:44, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
- I mean... I said I believed it was a soundtrack album and so did another editor. There were citations in the lede. I think the dispute could've been resolved without all this research, but I'm hoping a consensus is reached quickly. I think it was only IP editors calling it Beyoncé's "seventh studio album". Would've preferred if we kept it at what was obvious/apparent/official (soundtrack) and then reach a consensus if there was any reason to contest that labelling. @174.254.69.46 and 174.254.67.204: You have already twice added to the article that this is Beyoncé's seventh studio album. Please self-revert your edit and participate in this discussion until a consensus is met. Please provide citations that state that The Gift is a the official studio follow-up to Lemonade. Compilaiton Album
User:Nice4What has made some compelling arguments to back up that it may be a 'soundtrack album', but I'm just going to put my opinion out there for the sake.
However, as per WP:SPADE, this album seems to be a 'Various artist themed compilation album'. Wikiepida defines says A compilation album comprises tracks, which may be previously released or unreleased, usually from several separate recordings by either one or several performers. And Wikipedia defines a soundtrack album as 'any album that incorporates music directly recorded from the soundtrack of a particular feature film or television show." GRANTED, the interludes are soundbites from the film, none of the actual music is featured in the film. It is irrelevant that Beyoncé has called it a "soundtrack album", as per WP:ABOUTSELF.
Overall, my stance is that the album is a soundtrack album, somewhat. And the album is a compilation album, somewhat. However, I feel as though the album is better suited to being called a 'Compilation album', because I believe it to fit the definition better than being called a soundtrack album. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LondonQuays (talk • contribs)
- Isn't the track "Spirit" from this album featured in the film? Also, it's not up to us to use definitions provided on Wikipedia to decide what sort of album The Gift is. The artist says it's a soundtrack. Reliable sources say it's a soundtrack. You can see last year's Black Panther: The Album, another similar Disney-funded soundtrack album that only had three songs actually used in the film. - Yeh tbh I agree with you, I just wanted to state my opinion before you changed my mind. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LondonQuays (talk • contribs)
- @LondonQuays: You should explicitly state if your opinion has changed though so that a consensus could be more easily reached. Also, don't forge to sign your comments! Nice4What (talk · contribs) – (Don't forget to share a Thanks ♥) 22:53, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

New Information Discovered The sound recording of the album is copyrighted as a compilation album. If you look at the bottom of these links, you can see it is says "Compilation ℗ 2019 Parkwood Entertainment LLC, under exclusive license to Columbia Records, a Division of Sony Music Entertainment". https://open.spotify.com/album/552zi1M53PQAX5OH4FIdTx and https://listen.tidal.com/album/113655822
This must mean it is legally recognised as a compilation album. If that makes sense. This is no longer about opinion. It is a compilation. Fact. As per WP:SPADE, this album is a compilation album.

- My opinion has changed: I believe The Lion King: The Gift should be listed as a compilation album, as it is one.
LondonQuays (talk) 22:57, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
- @LondonQuays: No. Sorry but I hope to change your opinion again. That doesn't "mean it is legally recognised as a compilation album"... that's simply your own interpretation of it. I don't think you've studied music law. I will once again point to Black Panther: The Album, listed as a Soundtrack album, yet on Spotify it also reads "This Compilation ℗ 2018 Aftermath Records". Also, the soundtrack for Into the Spider-Verse has "℗ This Compilation ℗ 2018 Republic Records, a division of UMG Recordings, Inc" on Spotify but it is a soundtrack album. It's no secret. We can't interpret these sound recording copyrights on our own, but we can look at what reliable sources and the lead artist has said. - The difference is that the music in the Gift is not in the album (apart from one song). I'm sure the music in the other albums is in the actual movies. We 100% need some Wikipedia dispute resolution, like a third opinion. Because we both have very different opinions on this.LondonQuays (talk) 23:10, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
- @LondonQuays: That's where I believe you may not know the difference. All three are Disney-related projects, with the recent strategy being releasing a movie score along with a soundtrack featuring various artists. From Black Panther, only three of the 14 tracks are played in the movie. For Spider-Verse, I also believe it's three out of 13. For Lion King (I'm not sure if "Bigger" is also in the film), there's two out of 13 tracks used (not counting interludes).
Don't take this the wrong way, but if you're a new editor who is not familiar with editing album-related articles, it's okay to take a step back to better understand what sort of labelling should be used. If you're not familiar with the Black Panther and Spider-Verse soundtracks (which you kind of indicated by saying
I'm sure the music in the other albums...
), maybe it makes more sense that you recognize you're not familiar with how this Beyonceé album should be labelled. Nice4What (talk · contribs) – (Don't forget to share a Thanks ♥) 23:19, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

Note: It appears that User:Maintaining went ahead and changed the infobox type to soundtrack. Nice4What (talk · contribs) – (Don't forget to share a Thanks ♥) 02:22, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
